In my opinion this is like the Full Metal Jacket. In FMJ, the basic training part in the beginning has nothing to do with the action in Vietnam. And it was by far the best part with Lee Ermey's ad lib performance.
Same thing here; Omaha beach assault is the best part far and away, but had nothing to do with the rest of the plot (which is unbelievably lame).
Spielberg is not quite the genius movie guy he is made out to be. He clearly stole an idea from FMJ.
Without the DDay invasion of Normandy, there would have been no story, though. Dday lays the foundation for the entire movie.
Pvt. Ryan wouldn't have air-dropped into France, and wouldn't have been lost. His brother wouldn't have died on the beach, thus Matt Damon wouldn't have been the last surviving son.
Tom Hanks & CO. wouldn't be looking for anyone, as they wouldn't have even been in the European theater and wouldn't have been given a mission to locate Ryan.
I love both movies, and I can DEFINITELY see the glaring similarities though. Both movies are about the American Military and have battle scenes.
Ummm I disagree with you on both points, the Omaha Beach scene and the Basic Training scenes did impact the rest of the film and they were NOT the best parts.

The D-day landings add depth to Miller's leadership skills and how his squad face the enemy under pressure. (we're introduced to Jackson and how his skill with a rifle bails the squad out later in Normandy, for instance).
Vietnam and WW2 were hugely different conflicts and there is a sense of unity and leadership in SPR.
I could go on, but basically, so much of your comparison is simply incorrect.
