I assumed that the gypsies stole the violin from kasper's grave, but why? Are gypsies known for "grave-robbing"? Just wondering...any gypsy experts out there??

Not sure why this is so confusing to people... The gypsies clearly robbed the graves. Pussan would not have waited long enough for the body to become a skeleton and I actually felt that he loved the boy and felt his connection to the violin. Also why on earth would he sell the violin to gypsies? They didn't understand it's significance or it's value. He would have sold it to a concert violinist or someone who recognized it.
The Gypsies stole it many years later.

Not reading the entire thread, so apologies if this has been said before.
The reasons people have trouble with the scenrio as presented is twofold. Firstly, the idea that gypsies rob graves is both nonsensical and panders to bigotries. Secondly, looking for grave goods in the cemetery of a religious institution where everyone buried would have been either an orphan or a cleric who had taken a vow of poverty, is spectacularly stupid.
I love this movie, but there are some very strange things in it that mar the experience, and this is one of them.
I agree no conclusions can be made as to how the gypsies had the violin. Anyone could have taken it. And considering its's known history at the time, it would travel the black market or someone above the law.

What I got from it was this. Pousin was conflicted and thought about stealing it but didn't. He would have had more respect for the grave AND would have wanted to cover his tracks. He wouldn't have torn it open like that.
Gypsies, or any other grave robber wouldn't care who was in the grave only WHAT was in it of value. By that logic I concluded that the gypsies stole it.
Also gypsies wouldn't have had much money to buy it. If you're going to rob a grave, disrespect its occupant, you're at least going to want to get the most money for your efforts by selling it to someone who can pay top dollar.

The Roma did not steal the violin. It was centuries after that it resurfaced.
shareThere’s some ambiguity in the scene, seeing Poussin’s anguish when he learns the violin was buried with Kaspar Weiss. But because multiple graves were robbed, Poussin is not the culprit. Also, had Poussin robbed the grave, the violin would not have transitioned to the Gypsies, which was the point of the scene. All along, we see the transitions.
