Catherine is so beautiful and even outfits suit her so much as if a gem on gold.
She was perfect for the role,a beautiful Elena.Salma Hayek is good but not at all charming and elegant like catherine.
Salma is nice (great in say, Desperado), but Catherine was made for this role, she was marvelous in it.

Catherine was perfect for it
i cant see anyone else in that role, ok she didnt need too much acting but her chemistry with Antonio Bnaderas was the best iv seen in a movie
while Salma Hayek is indeed beautiful you have to remember that the role required an actress that came off as an elegant victorian age brat. Hayek just didnt feel right for this type of role.
shareAs a Spanish-American, I had no problem with Catherine Zeta-Jones playing Elena. Catherine is British and Elena was Spanish. You have one European woman playing another. They are both "white" roles. Technically, it might even actually be more authentic to have a Brit play a Spaniard rather than a Mexican. Although Salma Hayek is actually of Spanish and Lebanese decent. Salma & Antonio work well together in other movies but I felt that Catherine was perfect in this role.

Catherine did great in this role.
I also believe Salma would have done great. She played a "proper" brat in Desperados and did quite well with the role. Now, you wanna talk about an actress with Spanish blood not right for the role? Picture CAMERON DIAZ. Nuff said.
Despite the fact that Catherine was almost 30 when this was filmed. You can believe her being 20ish. Salma would have done great but Catherine did fabulous in that role. Definately sparks flew between her and Banderas.
Yes Hayek has a body to kill for, but I don't think it would have been the right role for her.
Agreed. As gorgeous as Hayek is, she doesn;t really exude the kind of innocence that Jones did. Hayek just looks more "worldly".
