Am I the only one who thinks Selma Hayek was too bautiful to play Kahlo?

With all due respect to Kahlo, who is a good painter in her own right, but I'm not really into her style, but I think that taking a drop dead gorgeous woman like Hayek to play Kahlo was a bad move, because it never really worked for me, because i knew Kahlo really wasn't that good looking, and so the movie was never gelling for me.

Am i the only one who think this?

P.S. I know it was Hayek who tried to get the movie made, and wasn't asked to do it.

They tried to make Salma Hayek a little bit ugly with the unibrow but still her beuty shined through. If you just dont think of Salma Hayek as an actress but as Frida Kahlo it woked for me at least.

Well I happen to agree that Selma Hayak is a beautiful woman, but I also think so was Frida Kahlo. Frida had charisma and commanded a room when she was present from what I've researched about her. Have you ever met someone who wasn't particualarly what you might call beautiful and find out that your eyes were wrong once you interact with this person...well I think that that is how Frida was.

Also, if you look at pictures of Frida and the ones of Selma as Frida, they have many simularities.

I would like to suggest maybe you read more on Frida and see if you can get past her eyebrows. Her eyes were incredible and her life was powerful.

Good luck!

Frida Kahlo was actually considered an extremely attractive woman.. Our idea of beauty differs, but she had many lovers and was considered beautiful

i personally thinkk that frida kahlo was very beautiful, and she makes herself much more unattractive than she really was in her paintings, by thickening her eyebrows, accentuating her moustache, and reinforcing all her less attractive qualities.

As I said elsewhere, I just finished watching the PBS documentary "The Life and Times of Frida Kahlo". From the many contemporary photographs and even several film clips, once you get past the unibrow and the mustache, I would say Frida Kahlo was a very pretty woman.

give me a *beep* break

what is wrong with looking at a drop dead gorgeous woman for an hour and a half. no, kahlo wasnt that hot, but i would personally prefer to lose myself in that story with hayek and her fab boobs in the role rather than somebody who looked like kahlo... moustache and all.

reply

Besides lacking the intensity of a driven artist, the Frida in this version wasn't crippled enough. Simply showing an old scar (while showing her bountiful boobies) isn't pain & suffering enough.

Was there a shortage of Academy Award-calibre actresses that year? Seriously.

I agree on this one.I own the movie and all,but Salmas performance I wasnt feeling.I know Im gonna catch flack from her fans for this.I more enjoyed Alfred Molinas work as Rivera.I believed she could of put more depth into the person she was playing.I read articles, quotes, and bios on Frida over the net and I felt she could of did more.Yes,Salma Hayek is a GOREGEOUS woman,no doubt, but I felt there could of been a little more "umph" to Frida Kahlo, because this painter, this woman was much more than just tears and screaming.
Also, one more thing..I agree that the real Frida was not a sex symbol just by looking at her,but the more I looked at the photographs of her and all.. her presense is commanding to me.She is beautiful..her personality and numerous love affairs attest to that. She,to me,in an age of superficiality was a real real woman..and I admire her for being as such.

Wow...I guess I'm the only one who actually thinks Frida and Salma could both be said to be equally drop-dead gorgeous.

I know Frida had a moustache, unibrow, etc. but I think these accentuated her looks and just made her all the more charismatic and attractive.

FYI to all you people out there, she actually made her moustache and unibrow thicker in her paintings because it was supposedly an inside joke with Diego. Diego had the boobs while Frida had the moustache.

She was a gorgeous woman, and Salma is a gorgeous woman who didn't really capture the charm and the crazy all that good in the movie but still gave a convincing role in the love/suffering scenes.

reply

Salma looked a lot like the photos I've seen of Frida. I have a book authored by Salomon Grimberg, 1997, about Frida's life and art. On the inside cover there is a black and white photo of a young Frida and Salma does bear a striking resemblence to her.

Both are very attractive.

Agree, I felt the chubby, comical Alfred Molina stealing the show from the beautiful but overhyped Salma Hayek.

Right.Well everyone has a right to an opinion and everyone has a right to the way they present their appearance.I dont think its contempt that had her not
wax that unibrow and "moustache" of hers,I think maybe it was bc she accepted herself as is and I believe nothing says confidence more like being yourself. Also many of her lovers looked beyond that anyway. My personal philosophy may sound ridiculous to some or make a sh*t-load of sense, but:The more you stare at a gorgeous person the more their imperfections show, the more you stare at an "unattractive" person, the more their inner beauty shines out.
And thats how I saw Frida Kahlo...

Hey I'd like to weigh in:

I think both Salma and Frida is/was very hot, but in two entirely different ways. Both though possess a sexuality that is undeniable.

To each his own!!!
I'll take em both!!! LOL
