Casting for this movie

Just watched this movie for the first time in probably a decade. I find the casting choices for this movie to be interesting. Jessica Alba, the guy from The Shield, and the guy from Nip/Tuck seem to be in the film just because they were in other Fox properties. Jessica Alba seems to be miscast in the role and seems to be there just to look hot. Her delivery of her lines seems unnatural and would be better suited for a more serious actress in her 30s (someone like Naomi Watts or Uma Thurman would have been good in the role at the time). Also Human Torch as portrayed in this film seems like would be better represented by Seann William Scott since he is good in “party animal” roles.

Jessica Alba never seems comfortable in the role. There is no chemistry between her and Richards. Chris Evans is completely unlikable but maybe that's the way Human Torch is supposed to be. But the guy who plays Thing is very well cast.

reply

And when you find out Michael Chiklis does the voice naturally without any FX assitance seals the deal for him being perfect for Thing.

reply

I didn't know that. Yes, that is even more impressive.

Thats an good catch, its like a form of networking. You already have the report with these people and know what they can do, so why not start with who you know.

I once had a coworker tell me its hard to get on a film crew, because Directors and Producers stick with who they know and love even for jobs like Hairdresser, Mic Operator, etc. So getting your foot in the door is not easy. But I've never tried getting into jobs like this, and we all have to start somewhere.

reply

Ain't that the truth!

For example, Jennifer Lawrence's Red, White and Water has an interesting production history because the first assistant director, Christopher Surgent, is one of the executive producers because he had previously worked with her on Catching Fire and the Mockingjay movies before working with her on Red Sparrow.

Both of the "Red" films involved the talents of Mark DeSimone (ADR mixer), David J. Thompson (steadicam operator), Takahide Kawajami (assistant director) and Tyler Newhouse (ADR recordist/editor). David, Takahide and Chris had already worked together on I Am Legend, but there were more people who went from working on Will Smith’s movie to Jennifer’s Russian spy movie, so the circle of trust was narrowed down by the time that she did her NOLA film.

As much as I dislike the movie, the casting is mostly solid. Except for Alba as Sue Storm and McMahon as Doctor Doom. I liked Gruffud, Chicklis, and Evans just fine.

Apparently before Tim Story was attached as director, they first approached Peyton Reed (Ant-Man 1 and 2). While Peyton Reed was involved, he envisioned Alexis Denisof as Reed Richards, Charlize Theron as Sue Storm, John C. Reilly as Ben Grimm, Paul Walker as Johnny Storm, and Jude Law as Doctor Doom.

reply

Reed’s casting would have been excellent!

reply

Yeah, what could had been.

reply

The casting for this movie was genius. Underrated film overall.

You will often find that people who make the successful transition from TV to film have studios behind them which have shared interests.
