Quite possibly the worst movie of the 90s

I just watched this movie on Encore tonight. I have seen it several times before and always felt it was weak, but this time it really hit me how absolutely wretched it is. The only decent part is Mike Myers' portrayal of Rubell. The acting is horrible, but the script is even worse. I can't count how many times the potential climax turned out so incredibly anticlimactic. And the lip syncing by Salma Hayek? OHG how "tacky" as Steve Rubell would say. It just doesn't build to anything nor does it deliver any sense of sympathy for the characters. I just wonder how it got a 5.5 on the rating scale.

but the music was great :D

reply

This is one of my all time favorite movies. The music was brilliant and Mike Myers did an amazing job.

reply

I thought it was ok. Not great, but entertaining enough.

But i hated the end though...

The movie is fine.

How many people diss this movie because they don't 'get' that culture (and that doesn't mean to get it, they have to like that particular value system) and those times? And/or don't like the music, the fashions, etc.?

I think it was a fairly accurate slice of that time and lifestyle.

I also thought the characters were fairly realistic.

In real life, not everyone is an uber-genius, uber-successful, uber-moral, or some comic book hero on steroids.

I enjoy watching this movie and I like the soundtrack.

For some folks if they weren't 'there' and they don't have any imagination, they just won't 'get' it.

Quite possibly the worst piece of criticism on IMDB

reply

Lol you haven't seen many movies then

i watched this movie for the first (and only) time last night, and i have to agree that it is just plain horrible. truly, this movie sucks. the only thing that could possibly be considered even halfway good was mike myers's acting, but that's it. god, what a piece of garbage.

reply

Well maybe not the worst movie of the 90s.... but as far as possibilities with a credible cast, what could be fun material, and fun music..... yeah, it pretty much sucked...

Poorly acted by what is actually a good cast. Badly, badly edited. Terrible script that started nowhere and went nowhere.

The only (and I mean only) redeeming factor for this film is Mike Myers performance.

This movie was def one of the top ten weakest stupidest biggest pieces of sheeeete i have ever seen in my life.

reply

I loved this movie.

Seriously, I thought it was good.

I love watching this movie like I love watching Striptease. They are so bad they are funny to watch. Mike Myers was truly great in this film and I love watching him, but sometimes you couldnt help but see him doing this character on Saterday Night LIve. HA HA. It is why in the hell would they make a movie about a campy 70s club. HAHA

reply

Well it wasn't just a campy '70s club. It was THE club. It was the place to be and be seen. All the stars from the day were there. It was a different time than now. It is hard to imagine one club being that popular but back then it was.

A movie this biographical can never be good.
It's too dependent on biography and historical details.
A truly creative movie has to put the drama and psychology
and filmmaking first. Screw what really happened unles you are making a
documentary.
For example the movie Chinatown borrowed the Kerckhoff/Owens Valley water scandal but moved the facts and dates around in order to create a timeless noir masterpiece.
The facts are the slave to the filmmaking, not vice-versa.
Synthesis, not mimicry. Damn, when are they gonna learn.

Biograpical movies like "54" are just cinematic karaoke.
Nothing new or creative about them. Just biography and history.
And a bunch of stars thhrown in.
