Can't believe he would have never left town for 30 years

What about when he first got his drivers license? Don't you think he would have at least once tried to drive outside of his familiar environment?

The whole show and island were designed to indoctrinate him into staying. They obviously manipulated his dads death to make him fear water, but they regularly reiterated on the radio that travel was dangerous, undesirable and that seahaven was "the best place on earth". The film is primarily a metaphor for the dangers of shiftlessness.

There was also a poster about traveling and the word DANGER put across the word. He does eventually find that the bridge goes to nowhere with Marlon. Being isolated from REAL news is another unbelievable concept. Advancing technology was no a part of his world.

I don't understand why they felt the need to keep him from ever leaving. Why not let him go on a Caribbean cruise or European vacation ? It's not like it it would ruin the show. Once he comes back they can resume the show. It seems like an unnecessary amount of effort and energy to keep him in the town 100%.of the time. Allowing him to go somewhere for a week or so would also give the actors a vacation as well.

Perhaps they were worried that they couldn't contain him on a Caribbean Cruise or an island or something?

The weather isn't something they can control, the emotions, etc. Plus there would be others potentially on an island or vacation like that who could ruin the entire show by telling Truman what's going on.

They might have better chances on a boat.

Well, that's true. I hadn't really thought of the idea that somebody could recognize him and tell him the truth.

Maybe the show should have set up a cruise in which everyone on the ship was an actor, and just never dock the ship the whole cruise. :-)

It seems easier than all of the stuff they had to go through in order to contain him.

Yeah, if they had a cruis eship set up and had it full of actors they could hav ehad a vacation for Truman. And solved the issue with him desiring to leave the island.
