Can't believe he would have never left town for 30 years

What about when he first got his drivers license? Don't you think he would have at least once tried to drive outside of his familiar environment?

reply

Correct me if I'm wrong, but isn't the reason he never drove away from home is because he's surrounded by water and was too afraid to drive over the bridge. Also, he was discouraged from traveling all his life.

reply

That was the reason they used but could you really be manipulated into a phobia that powerful? I remember when I learned to drive, we would go as far as we had gas money to get back.

reply

I bet it's kind of an allusion to "It's a Wonderful Life" (much like that black-and-white show they put on his TV: "Show Me The Way To Go Home").

In IAWL, Stewart's character dreams of exploring and going places, but ended up spending his life in his town. Though unlike Stewart, Truman had no Mr Potter to do battle with, so he's trapped in a perfect world that is pretty much a vacation you can never leave from.

"Thanks, guys." "So long, partner."

You can't project your own experiences and preferences onto others. I grew up in a small town. Our next door neighbor was 88 when I was a kid, and he had never been outside the county in his entire life. Even when he was inducted into the military in WWI he was assigned a local post. He never thought it was unnatural, and had no desire to go anywhere.

reply

Agreed. My maternal grandma never wanted to go anywhere outside her town either. It wasn't until her kids were grown and married that my grandpa started insisting they travel (plus, some of her kids moved out of town, so she almost had to in order to see them more often.) But given her way, she would've never gone more than five miles from her house.

reply

Yea you're right.
I don't believe a person can so easily be manipulated into a phobia either.
But I guess this is just one of those movies where you have to suspend your disbelief.

it happens with dogs and dog attacks all the time... I remember some show on tv about Phobias and this really strong body builder guy was terrified of dogs because he was bit when he was young.
the guy literally started sobbing and crying like a baby when they brought a dog near him...

so your point is pretty stupid

reply

Yes you can have a phobia that powerful.

I used to know a guy who had a severe phobia of bridges due to a childhood accident in which his close friend was killed. He would literally freak out when I was about to drive over a bridge. The one time I drove over a bridge with him in the passenger seat, he had to close his eyes and was nearly hyperventilating while holding on for dear life.

By the time I was over the bridge he was drenched in sweat and appeared as if he had a panic attack. He always refused to drive over any bridges himself and I don't believe he was psychologically capable of driving over a bridge without falling into a nervous breakdown.

They tried very hard to make travelling seem scary and not worth it. The travel agency had a picture of a plane getting hit by a lightning bolt haha. I think there were other posters around town too with messages implying that he should leave town.

He was scared to take a boat because they rigged that scene with his father supposedly dying in the water.

When he started to get brave enough to travel off the island, they made it very inconvenient with stalled buses and long lead times for buying a ticket anywhere.

reply

He had the phobia as others have said and when he did have the courage to finally leave and follow that girl to Fiji his mom got "sick" and he had to stay.

reply

Well like they said in the show, they kept creating ways for him to STAY on the island. We only saw a few but it all culminated in this phobia of the water which is rooted in his father's "death." After a while he probably did what anyone else would do and just settle into a life.

reply

There was the scene where he was with his mother and they were looking at old photos.
it implied that he was taken to an obviously fake Mt Rushmore.
She remarked that he slept all the way there and back.
maybe he was sedated and taken to and from the site while unconscious andb therefore believing he'd travelled off the island on this one occasion as a child, This was before his father 'died' which put the seal on his phobia of crossing water.

On a similar note, I do wonder of my claustrophobia which prevents me from using most of the London Underground and all lifts except glass ones, was not actually inherited from my mother, but accidently nurtured from her.

reply

An example:

There are people who are born, live, and die in New York City.

They never leave, they never depart, they never have a desire to leave.

It is sad, yes, but there are many who accept the reality of which they are presented and stick with it. It's realistic in real life and it's realistic in the Truman Show with Truman.

reply

Not even to go to Jersey????

reply

Actually, that's why they never leave, they don't want to go through Jersey.

reply

I can't imagine why not... Jersey RULES!!!!

reply

He tried, even the audience doesn't know he's trapped, when they talk about the actress he's in love with a waitress watching the television asks "I cant believe he didn't go to Fiji after her", we can only assume that this is why he's so obsessed with the idea of going to Fiji, that's where he thinks she is.
The only way out of town (from what he knows) is a long bridge over water and they conditioned him early on to be terrified of water, and when he does cross the bridge with his 'wife' we see the amount of obstacles they're willing to throw in his way to stop him from trying to leave the fake town.
They also frequently mention airplanes blowing up and being struck by lightening, when the light fixture falls early in the film the radio says its part of an airplane that came apart, any possible form of travel that would allow him to leave the town he has been conditioned to be terrified of from a young age. When he finally does overcome his fear of water in an attempt to leave the town by boat they're even willing to try and drown him to stop him finding out the truth and leaving.

reply

OP you truly did miss the point of Truman fearing the water. he won't drive across a bridge. also it's not THAT strange considering all elements in his life would subconciously be convincing him in the back of his mind to fear leaving

remember even in real life some people in all parts of the world never leave their small villages/towns for their WHOLE LIFE. it happens in real life naturally, so why would it not happen in a fake small town in which EVERY single person was there to make sure you wanted to stay?

If i go crazy will you still call me Superman?

reply

Well technically it's only been around 13years or so. Assuming he is 30 and he got his license around 16-18 (which btw could have been manipulated as well).

If it indeed was 30 years post adulthood, and they had shown an older Truman having spent most of his life at Seahaven, then yes I would have found that pretty unbelievable, even with the phobia conditioning and all. But in the course of the years, he does make several attempts while they try their best to put in psychological and physical roadblocks.

reply

"Don't you think he would have at least once tried to drive outside of his familiar environment?"

Besides the physical impositions, he was conditioned to believe by all around him such as Marlon and Meryl that travelling was a waste of time and should be avoided.
