The actors in Truman's life must have been really heartless.

Take Marlon for example, and the same could be applied to all of the "principal" actors in Truman's life, he spends his own entire life playing this role as Truman's best friend and he never actually comes to love Truman and think of him as a friend?

Marlon, after everything started to fall apart, was acting like he didn't give a damn, that it was "just a role", well how can he possibly feel that way after being Truman's friend (even if it was an act) for 30 years?

That's not even counting Truman's parents, they may have been playing a role but they did indeed raise him from a baby, did they feel nothing for him? That theirs was just a role that they could walk away from without actually feeling love for Truman?

I haven't personally seen them yet, but there are apparently deleted scenes that show Marlon showing empathy for Truman, which would definitely hint that he felt friendship for him. However, nothing can redeem those parents for me...you have to be pretty heartless to raise a kid from infancy and not really care about him.

I think what it boils down to is that people will do anything for fame. True, they probably were paid substantially to be on the show, but it may not be as much as we think. The principal actors (Meryl, Marlon, his mother) would have had to live on set to be as available as needed, which likely meant free housing, free food, free health insurance and benefits, and they likely didn't need to do any actual work. Add global fame on top of that, and you have a pretty sweet deal that a lot of people would actually love to have. True, they wouldn't be offset enough to enjoy the money they were making, but the brief times they were offset they would be swarmed with fans and interviews and adoration from around the world....which is why they got into the business in the first place.

that's what people might be like to get on TV though! It is believable.

What makes people say Marlon weas heartless?

i didnt see anything that makes me feel that he didnt genuinely like Truman?

He seemed uneasy when Christoff was in his ear making him lie.

funny this topic was the exact reaction from my buddies as we first saw this as kids, today i'm so used to it i don't think about it. you wonder how truman kept from having some kind of meltdown or panic attack as he realises his whole life has been a lie and that he is trapped in staged surroundings and no one is real. i understand in the 25 minute long twilight zone you couldn't have the main role have a nervous break down in every other episode, but since this is a feature length movie it could have been dealt with i figure, still it's hinted a few times and i watch this movie whenever it airs so it's not criticism, just a thought that struck me as i was watching it again. i love when his show girlfriend goes off script and lets out "you're not right in the head"... notice what an incredibly small part the girl had that was introduced as to take over for her, she appeared once in his office and i didn't even connect it was her until i saw the movie again, then she never re appears... i think it was her anyway. i've never seen the deleted scenes but they sound interesting as they show some more feeling for truman but cut, that was probably the best thing keeping in mind how it ends. if you want a similar story about a man caught in a fictional show, check out the twilight zone episode "a world of difference" in the 1959 series. in case i don't see you, good morning, good day, good afternoon, good evening and goodnight.βœ‹
