I feel like it would have been better had the movie been centered around Lovejoy.

I mean, that would have been just epic. No, Cal would not be portrayed in a better light - Cal was a POS regardless of the point of view of whomever the main character is: the reason why Lovejoy was there was because Cal's dad hired him to be his personal security guard to make sure Cal didn't act out of line. It would be interesting to see the story from Lovejoy's point of view, the character was pretty much a Clint Eastwood type of Edwardian Britain

I'm sorry, but I can hardly even remember who Lovejoy was.

Sure you do.
If you don’t then you haven’t watched the movie since the first time back in ‘97

I agree that Lovejoy did seem like an interesting guy.

Can definitely picture him as the "anti-hero" of his own movie.

So what's your take on the extended dining room fight?

That's where Cal tells Lovejoy if he retrieves the diamond, he can have it. So Lovejoy pursues Jack & Rose into the dining room for what was initially a 3 minute cat & mouse game ending in Jack beating up Lovejoy "care of the Chippewa Falls Dawsons"

It explains why Lovejoy's all bloody when we last see him

Cameron spent a ton of time, effort and cash on the scene (because they had to reset and re-sink the dining room for each take), but the test audiences hated it. Cameron eventually came to understand that it not only hurt the pacing but made no logical sense for ANYONE to burn valuable minutes chasing treasure on a literal sinking ship.
