Are the underwater scenes of the wreck the actual ship, or were some of them created for the movie?

I'm sure the scene where they locate the safe was Hollywood. But, pretty sure I read that Cameron made some trips to the wreck in doing research for the movie. He must have taken movies.

Some of the shots are supposedly those of the actual wreck: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Titanic_(1997_film)#Writing_and_inspiration

Cameron was fascinated by the actual wreck and did film footage of it and used it in the film, but I suspect some CGI enhancement was involved.

He also made a documentary a few years later where he went back to the actual wreck.

I thought those images seemed a little too clear. I would say you are correct.

Actual wreck. I think this was when Cameron discovered the joys of deep-sea exploration, and since then he's funded deep marine research and went to the bottom of the Marianna Trench in a submersible himself.

Good on him, for getting the movie studio to pay for his hobby! I wish I could do the same.

It's a mixture of real and CGI

All the shots of the exterior of the wreck are combination of actual footage taken when Cameron made his first expedition to the wreck in 1995, and footage of scale models of the wreck and subs filmed on a sound-stage filled with smoke to simulate the look of being at the bottom of the Atlantic.

And most of the shots of the interior of the wreck--for example the ROV going into Rose's stateroom and finding the safe--were filmed on an underwater set.
