Rose is one of the most annoying characters in the movie

Jack is immersed in water dying of hypothermia and she says 'I'm so cold... I can't feel my body' well... shut the *beep* up you stupid bitch! Jack's dying and you're complaining about yourself.

Yeah, I don't like Rose either. Parts of the film are cheesy, too, and the dialogue isn't always great. It's still my favorite movie of all time, though.

reply

Sorry but I can't agree with you. Granted you might find plenty of other things that you didn't like about Rose but the example you give, that she's complaining while Jack is dying, doesn't ring true to me. If you think about it Rose really was put through more physically up to that point than Jack. She’s done everything Jack has done plus she had to make her way through the sinking ship, in water up to her waist at times, gone up and down flights of stairs, etc., in order to get to him to rescue him. Also Jack was always the more dominant personality. After she complained he was very forceful. If anything at that point it seemed Rose was dying, not Jack. At least it seemed that way to me. Finally Rose acted to me like she was in shock then. She might not even realized that Jack WAS dying, until, ironically, he gave her some of his own strength to pull her out of shock and give her the power to go on.
Besides, to paraphrase Rose, wasn’t she a dish? I couldn’t really be too upset with her. Finally if you want to talk about annoying characters in the movie let's talk about her finance, his ex cop bodyguard, her mother, the coxswain in the boat who refuses to go back, the idiots keeping women and children locked up while the rich get into the boats. Rose doesn't come close to making the list for most annoying.

reply

'One of the most annoying' ISN'T the same as 'most annoying', and the others weren't 'annoying' (at least from my definition/use of the term). I'd use other terms to describe them.

I don't think you quite understood the position he is coming from as far as annoyance from Rose. And the other characters you list are not even relatively annoying, you only list them because they are supposed to be antagonists.

reply

Perhaps you're right. My view is if somebody is vile, disgusting, cowardly, reprehensible, and generally not a very nice person they're annoying. You can say, that Rose is annoying because she's spoiled, kind of whining, and more than a bit of a brat so I can see your point also. Still I liked her, both as a young woman and a very old lady.

reply

Oh, so that makes her annoying, huh? That example wasn't a prime or her annoyance.

I'm going to be honest and confess that I found Rose annoying and grating on her own right in later viewings. Especially in the second and third act. Despite that she does have her reasons to be rebellious, she does become blatantly reckless and rude with her rebellion, despite that she does have a couple of good deeds during the sinking of the ship. Perhaps it's due to how Kate Winslet, despite managing to give life and spirit to her performance, never makes Rose a truly endearing and warm character. But Rose was definitively grating at times.

reply

I'm a guy and I like Jack more than Rose even though I thought she had a stronger character performance wise. I think Kate Winslet is specialized in playing selfish characters where she is stronger performance wise than her character.

She managed to meet the same exact character standard and have a stronger performance in The Reader as well. She was even more of a selfish bitch in this movie by leading an underage boy on in an erotic relationship and letting her self rot to prison after lying about being the prime guard responsible for letting 300 people burn alive. This ultimately won her tons of awards including every all 4 of the major awards at Oscar season.

reply

Fair enough.

I know it seemed like I was trashing Kate Winslet as an actress and that wasn't my intention. While Kate has depth as an actress, she still rarely contributes by making her characters truly endearing.

reply

Both Jack and Rose were annoying to me. I wanted the real-life story, not two gits inserted to ruin the feel of the film. The story was sad and bad all on its own. It didn't need these two running around and calling each other's names every six seconds. Sometimes I have to blank them out as the ship is sinking because they ruin it for me. From the time Murdoch puts out the call the ship is about to hit, Rose and Jack don't matter to me. The human drama of the real story is what I wanted.

reply

I think Old Rose was even more annoying that young Rose.

-throwing the diamond in the water when it was worth so much money.
- attempting to climb on the ship once again (as an old lady).

reply

I really wish the late Bill Paxton's character was more like a Robert Ballard who found Titanic in the 80s, rather than a fortune hunter. I really wish they'd done a more reflective story of an explorer who was trying to find her. Have Paxton sitting in a room looking over the admiralty hearings both in the United States and Britain over the case. We see all those moments through Brock's eyes, not old Rose. Then we find the Titanic at the end of the film as the rusted out skeleton of it's former glory we've seen throughout the film as the sterling pride of the White Star Line.

reply

Yes, it always bothered me that she threw the diamond into the water...

reply

"Ooops" ... the very worst part of the film.

It showed that Rose was a fraud. That is sad.

reply

What do you mean that it showed she was a fraud?

reply

It showed she cared about no one but herself. The livelihoods of all of those people on the ship, that paid for her to revisit the Titanic site, depended on that jewel. She threw it into the ocean for no good reason.

reply

Those men were greedy dicks. Had she giving it to them whos to say their greed wouldn't have led to an all out war that would lead to the ship they were on sinking?

reply

A war that would sink the ship??? Again, get real. She didn't poop out that jewel, so it wasn't hers to throw away. .

reply

Well it kind of was because he gave it to her. After all those years who else would it belong to? This is a jewel heist after all so who's to say one of if not all of the men came packing with guns just in case they needed to protect themselves in the event that it was found and somebody tried to be greedy about it? Of course we didn't see that though because it's not that kind of movie but we as fans can have that imagination on the scenario.

Rose hands over this jewel that's worth millions if not billions and you think they're all going to just smile and pass it around then take it to some museum? ha.

Well, the way I understand it from previous discussions on this board, Cal's father put in an insurance claim on the "lost" diamond, and the insurance company PAID. So, legally, the diamond (should it be found) belongs to the insurance company. Makes sense to me.

People say Old Rose should have sold the diamond or given it to charity. Legally, it no longer belonged to her, and was not hers to dispose of.

reply

Agreed, Gubbio.

reply

The hell you mean it was no longer hers? He gave it to her so it's hers plain and simple. Thank god the movie didn't go into all of this pointlessness.

You are MORE than entitled to YOUR OPINION, but you are not facing the simple FACTS of the matter -- plain and simple.

reply

The only FACT of the Matter is he gave it to her. Once you give something to somebody it's Theirs PLAIN and Simple. There was no contractual signing or anything like that. The item was giving to her and remained in her possession for decades there for yes it was hers.

Believe whatever you choose. However, as I explained above, you are LEGALLY wrong.

If there was no insurance claim involved, I would agree with you. But, when the insurance company paid off on it, it became theirs.

Collecting insurance on an object (which Cal's father did) forfeits your right to said object. You can't have both the money and the object.

If Rose had tried to sell the diamond, a case of insurance fraud would arise, even though she, herself, never put in a claim for the diamond.

reply

Yes! Thank you for that great observation...... She was VERY SELFISH + HYPOCRITICAL! If money did NOT seem to be very important to her, as she claimed ad nauseum, then WHY keep the diamond? WHY deny Bill Paxton's character the chance to own something that he seems to value very much? NO, it NEVER officially belonged to Rose because Cal NEVER officially gave it to rose, but if she "opened her heart" to him, like he requested, then yes, he would've seriously considered giving it to her! Also, when his man servant put the diamond in Jack's coat pocket, Cal announced that 2 things were missing that "belonged to him"~ one of them was rose and the other was HIS DIAMOND! Lastly, if Cal gave the diamond to rose, then WHY did he freak out, telling Lovejoy that he mistakenly gave her his diamond, when he gave rose his warm coat, in order for rose not to feel cold, w/the diamond inside the coat pocket.....

reply

I don't see how it's selfish I mean she was just in extremely cold water for who knows how long before being aboard that door. She's really wet from said cold water and the door itself is probably chilly as hell from the temperature around them yet you think you'd be thinking about somebody else if you were in her place? I highly doubt it.
