1) The story is too rushed.
2) It's PG-13, Spawn can only work if it's R rated, as the animated series proves.
3) Miscasting. Martin Sheen is great but he was a wrong choice for Jason Wynn, it should've been a younger and more built actor.
4) John Leguizamo is WAYYYY too over the top as Clown, he can play very serious characters but I think the producers forgot that Clown is supposed to be intimidating and sinister and not a full blown looney tunes character. They also took away his ability to speak telepathically as the Violator.
5) The visual effects are very dated and were even dated for the time it was released. The shots in hell look like they were from an old Sega game.
6) Getting rid of Chapel and replacing him with a newer character, a mary sue with little to no purpose other than eye candy and shooting up the place--Jessica Priest. Chapel was a great character and was closer to Al, in addition to that he was also a member of Youngblood.
7) Stupid plot devices; Spawn crashes the party like an idiot in hopes to killing Jason when it only exposes him to security, not that it harms him very much he's the Devil's general after all. And later Jason gets a deadly virus placed in a piece of his hart and if anybody kills him it exposes everyone to it, um, what? That's just plain laughable even for a movie like this.
8) Sam and Twitch only get one lousy cameo and so does Angela.
That said, the hate for this movie is well deserved, but I will give it credit though for its cinematography, action scenes, and that Spawn at least looked kind of cool. And even though I earlier disowned the idea of replacing Chapel with Jessica Priest...I would so do Melinda Clarke in that armored catsuit in a heart beat.
I have an unbelievably long ignore list.
