Tim Burton. just watch 1989 Batman, Batman Returns, SLeepy Hollow take the feel from those movies and apply them to a Spawn movie and you would have it spot on.

I'm not entirely sure.
The fact is, you can never tell who would be best suited at directing something based on the things they've already directed.
Someone could become the next speilberg, or the next Burton after directing only one movie: Or a much better known director could make a movie the critics hate. So it's hard to say.
But I might say Robert Zemeckis, using the motion capture technique to preserve the cartoony look of the comic.
Sorry, don't know too many directors :D

Anyway, 'Spawn' is very dark and very gory and the director need to be depict that and be ok with it, so Robert Zemeckis? Na, don't think so.

Yes, and it was not bad, but I don't think the all CGI fest would fit 'Spawn'.
I would prefer to see 'real' actors and sets as well as gory effects a la 'Planet Terror', plus a kind of 'Sin City' aesthetic. I think Rodriguez could do a great job with 'Spawn'. 'Beowulf' is nor dark nor gore.

Bryan Singer (for that larger than life superhero feel): Superman Returns, X2, and the usual Suspects (for those villain skeptics)

Luc Besson: Leon(for this artsie yet graphically violent style)-The Professional (gary oldman shooting up the apartment scene) , Transporter (series producer)

Tony Scott (for that raw dawg feel): Man on fire, True Romance

or finally... and don't judge me for this one but...

M. Night Shyamalan(for musical choices, pure imagination, execution... except for The happening, that was crap): Unbreakable, Signs, and Lady in the water ( i use this movie as an example for the spawn villains)

David Fincher is a great choice. He's great at giving films a very dark, atmospheric feel to them. As for who should play spawn...not a clue, maybe Colin Salmon.

Rob Zombie He would make it more gruesome and violent and Sexy
I hope John Legizmo should be the clown in the remake if they do cause he kickass and who should Play Spawn hmm that should be someone bigger but know whut he doin so i think that Ken Foree maybe could play spawn but he to old but how bout Tony Todd he play good bad guy and sometime anti-hero's

Darrin Dewitt Henson would be my first choice for Al Simmons, John Leguizamo can stay as Clown because they chose a good actor for that part, Also Ian Mcshane for Jason Wynn & Donald Sutherland for Cogliostro.

Darrin Dewitt Henson is a wimpy dancer and not much of an actor. His acting in the Soul Food tv series and Stomp the Yard was terrible. I want a tough looking and talented actor to play Spawn. Like Dijimon Honsou, Idris Elba, Chiwetel Ejiofor, and Anthony Mackie. John Leguizamo needs to come back but he needs to be more scary. He wasn't that scary in the last movie.

I believe McFarlane would be the one of the less fortunate choices.
Aside from the fact that he is no director, I reckon he would lose his nerves on the 2nd day of shooting. Especially when dealing with hundreds of frustrations coming from hundreds of people involved. Drawing characters on paper and using one's own imagination to set the mood is one thing, but managing all those things live with actual humans and telling them exactly what you need of them is quite another.Some truly great masters of writing and atmospherics on paper have taken a stab at directing ,and it never turned out well. Character and script-wise, at least.
Frank Miller (The Spirit) and Clive Barker (The Fly 2), to name a few.

Mcfarlane should be kept on set as an advisory prima donna, but they shouldn't give him all the reigns in this one.

As for the choices...IMO, of course.
1. Alex Proyas. Some of you have already mentioned him, and what he did with Dark City would work like a charm with Spawn. At the risk of setting off some begrudged voices out there, The Crow isn't all that good, but even there Proyas shows he can do wonders with atmosphere and actor direction.
Downsides: not on the current Hollywood "hipster-director" list. other than that, no downsides whatsoever. The ideal choice as far as I'm concerned.

2. Henry Selick. The man behind the man (Burton, that is) on The Nightmare Before Christmas and the recent Coraline should get his first, entirely (if there is such a thing nowadays) live-action film. He can be morbid on par with the best of them, has an excellent visual style to him and works marvels with rather tight budgets.
Downsides: Production might take a decade or two, he won't get the job

3. James McTeigue. The student who bettered his teachers (The Wachowskis), as well as the man who directed one of the best comic book films of all time, V For Vendetta. He has a steady hand, the action scenes won't be choppy, but short, well timed and in the best interest of the story. He can conjure up a mesmerising film that will (hopefully) have you talking about the details of the film for some time to come. Another plus is he works really fast, while not sacrificing the though that nneds to be put into every scene.
Downsides: Too dependant on the Wachowskis (production side)

How about Ben Affleck direct it? He's starred in a superhero movie, although it wasnt that great. He's a better director than most people think in my opinion. I thought Gone Baby Gone was really good.

Or Stephen Norrington. He did blade 1, and League of Extraordinary Gentlemen.. I think the tone of blade 1 and Spawn are similar.

Zack Snyder no doubt. 300 and Watchmen were perfect adaptions of their graphic novels, and I think he could do great justice for the Spawn comics. Actor wise, I think John Leguizamo could be a great clown, just a little bit scarier this time around, and Wesley Snipes could be a good Spawn. What do you all think the story should be? A new story or a re-do of the other movie? I think it should limit the backstory ALOT, and focus on Simmons already as Spawn. The target audience of the movie will be fans of the comics, who already know the damn origin story, so keep it to a minimum, enough to tell newbies to the story whats going on. As for the actual story I think it should focus on The Curse(awesome villian imo) and have Sam and Twitch in it as part of the main story, not just a side project who are investigating the crimes occuring, but really involved in what's happening. I don't favour a straight from comics adaption, I think a moderately new story with McFarlane et. al working on the writing would be better. Thoughts?

McFarlane shoud not only write the script but also be an advisor on the set and have a say about everything related to the movie.
Snyder then, well I liked '300' and 'Watchmen', but I think that Snyder style is too "clean". I mean his images are just to nice to look at, Spawn need a more realistic treatment, a dirty, gory treatment. Think 'The Devil's Rejects' meet 'The Dark Knight'. I'll say Rob Zombie, Robert Rodriguez or maybe Neil Marshall. And a lot of $$$. And Sam & Twitch.

I like the idea of Stephen Norrington. He's due for a comeback and I really think he could make one hell of a Spawn movie.

i personally would not have rodiguez or zombie for this film. i find so many comic book apdaptations a bore due to there concentration on having so many sction sequences and there inabillity to stick to the source material. although i suppose sin city was pretty faithful to its source material.

I at first thought zack snyder but how about Guillermo Del Toro. His dark style would suit spawn and he did a decent job with hellboy.

Why does it need to be remade? It's only 12 years old. I like the film as it is, maybe in several more years they could remake it, but not yet.
