Favorite Scene???

I don't care what the critics say, I like this movie.

My favorite scene is the one of Simon and Emma in the restaurant. Simon, posing as Thomas More, begins to do a reading of Emma. He tells her that she has a weak heart, can't cook to save her life, and loves fish. Then Emma tells Simon she wants to try doing this. She begins to tell him about how he is running away from his past and how he doesn't have to be afraid of who he is because he is beautiful. What makes this scene so magical is Simon broke into Emma's apartment to learn about her, but she was able to divine who he was through her purity of heart and honesty. Great Scene!

I love this scene too and it is definately my favorite! I also love it whan they meet up again at the end and then she leaves the pin with the note saying 'if cold fusion is free, then you and I are free too' (sigh) This movie is one of the best for warm and fuzzies!

I think this is why the critics and some moviegoers disliked this movie so much. They came to see action, adventure, and espionage and instead Simon and Emma's romance was prominent. But I feel everything was well balanced. Loved the part when they escaped from Tretiak's goons and were hiding in the tunnel under the viaduct! If I could switch places with Elizabeth Shue for 30 seconds, I'd be an even happier girl!

I think there is enough of everything for everyone. My husband loves this movie, he doesn't realy see it as a love story. Obviously there was enough action and excitement for him to stay interested because he will not watch "sloppy chick flicks" in his words.

How about the music in this movie? The "Love Theme" by Graeme Ravell that plays during the restaurant scene and near the end when Emma is on her way to meet Simon is one of the most beautiful I've ever heard. It truly adds to these scenes and makes them work.

I tried so hard to get the instumental soundtrack, but it's not available in Australia. I did get the other soundtrack with the songs. That love theme is one of my allime faviorites. It is true when they say music can make or break a scene, and you are right that it definately makes the scenes work. Thumbs up to Graeme Ravell!!!

From time to time they will offer the score on Amazon. That's where I found mine. I payed a pretty penny for it, but I loved the score so much I didn't mind.

I love this movie as well
Just before the end after Emma has left the note and pin for Simon and hes waiting for her in the archway outside the university, they have a conversation and she goes to deliver her speech, she turns and he mouths i love you. Soooo sweet! i have played that bit over and over as it makes me all squishy inside!!

RIP Heath, you will be missed xx

Hehehe, just watched this movie again recently with my hubby, & my favourite scene would have to be the part when Simon is dressed up & posing as Ivan Tretiak, & Simon says to Ivan "do you know what the worst part about pretending to be you is?" & Ivan says what, & Simon says "pretending to be so bad in bed" & Ivan says "Son of de bitch!" & runs off after him, BIG LOL, that part always cracks me up for some reason :-D

I love when Ivan is punked by Simon when dressed as Ivan. "Phone goes the OTHER way you moron!" However, my favorite scene is COLD FUSHION:

The current is passed through. The molecules gather at the plates, closer and close, and FUSE. Energy is given off in the form of helium. This new energy---the result of fused helium boils water, water turns to steam and it runs the generator, and electrical energy is given off!

So much current, GIGAWATTS, are being produced the light bulb BURSTS! The circuits start to fuse, and SO MUCH CURRENT has no where to go--- a huge column of light from electrical energy is scene....high above the night skies of Moscow.

The people, freezing in the streets, stop. STOP cold in their tracks. All are amazed, some consider it a devine act and cross themselves, other pray, and then other cheer.
"It works! Karpov's invention works!"
"Karpov! Karpov! Karpov!" the crowd cheers.

Ivan is stunned, Karpov (wisely taking Simon's advice) has gone from villan to hero and waves to his newly 99% supportive people (Ivan and his goons being the only non-happy), and Ivan decides it is time to bail.

To all (but especially Reverie3)

I bought this film on VHS after watching it at the cinema. After selling my collection in early 2000's (reluctantly) I recently spotted it at a market and bought it on VCD.

For some reason (as a married heterosexual man!!!!) I love the romantic scenes in this film. Although...they are not filmed romantically. To all my other mates, they focus in on the disguises and action, but I am fixated on the reaction to Emma that Simon Templar has.

Every woman above who has said that the restaurant is their favourite is so true. From a man's point of view, it is the honesty (or not being able to cope with not giving it) that is paramount to this scene. It is the fact that Simon "stole" the information on Emma from her apartment, yet she gleamed it on a one-off meeting (with someone pretending to not be himself).

I am currently watching it as we speak, and I remember the soundtrack from the last time I watched it. A great addition.

My fave is the scene in which Emma visits the Shelley Memorial (white sculpture of a reclining nude man) and Simon, as Thomas More, asks Emma, "do you like it?". After she tells him yes and the reason why, he stands up and tells her that she should visit his home in Africa, a place alive with energy from where all things began. As he describes it, he approaches her until they are face to face, only to stop short and tell her "sorry...I'm not very good with people"--and then turns and leaves...

Hilarious.

I couldn't stop laughing the first time I saw it.

Also, the scene after, where Simon finds Emma reading his poem in a restaurant. A waiter approaches them while they are discussing why she hides cold fusion notes in her bra and asks them if they would like anything. He mumbles "Latour 56". When told by the waiter that it is "very expensive, 400 pounds", he promptly states, "I'll have two then".

"very expensive, 400 pounds", he promptly states, "I'll have two then".
As funny as that verbal exchange was, you must also include the punchline, where Simon takes 800 pounds from his crotch area and tells the waiter he can count it if he wants to.

Agreed! Epic response to a condescending reply!!

"I do what I do best, I take scores. You do what you do best...try to stop guys like me."

reply

My mother, I have movie nights with her while my father is out with his friends on a guy's night as she's in her late 70s and loves my company, pointed something out to me I never picked up on:

The easy joke is that he has crotch money and the waiter can count it.

My mother pointed out Simon is mimicking Emma since she kept the formula in her bra/underwear. He's doing a subtle "I'm just like you so relax" move.

What do you think?

reply

"It's so early. You guys want to get some coffee or somezing?"

"Do you like it? What do you love about it?"

Yeah, I say these occasionally in totally non-Saint related situations. They are just fun to say.

reply

Other good phrases to say in non-Saint related situations:

"What are those, drugs? Can I have some?"

"I love this country!"

"Can't spend hard currency in hell."

"We can use it to destroy our enemies!"

He left a note. He left a simple little note that said, "I've gone out the window."

Its been a while since I seen it but my favorite scene is when Simon and Emma are sitting in the audience just before her speech on fusion then he asks her "You don't believe in all that fusion mumbo jumbo" and she gets up for her speech. Then he says "oops!" I guess its the way he is dressed and the way he delivers that line.
