Just to fill time during the credits, and fill everyone's mind with the societal expectation that everyone NEEDS to get married. And the idea that all single women envy all brides, and desperately wantn to be the bride themselves.
shareIt's a deliberately cheesy number, put there to set viewer expectations that we are about to watch a traditional, old-school romantic comedy, and then the movie slowly reveals itself to overturn genre cliches and tropes: the heroine turns out to be not-so-nice and relatable, the seemingly shallow bimbo antagonist ends up being intelligent and mature, there is no happy ending, etc. So, the opening sequence is brilliantly deceptive, like the rest of the movie, and works well in that way.
