Did Gus Pierce look a lot like Val Kilmer?

They've always been similar. Not the looks so much IMO. Maybe occasionally. But their acting styles are identical, choice in roles are pretty much interchangeable. Meaning you could take one out of a movie and replace him with the other and it would basically be the same movie/performance. They are both very good actors who have been unepreciated throughout both their careers.

I think it is the mouth/smile most of all. I had thought he was the same actor playing Fernand in Count of Monte Cristo and my son argued with me but I was right. I didn't think he resembled Val much in that but in this, yes.

Yep. When he looks on through the glass at Kevin Spacey early in the movie, when his face is out of focus I thought "He looks like Val Kilmer!"

No. But Guy Pearce is similar to Kilmer.
