Who did you feel sorry for most?
I think I felt bad for George the most. A lot of the characters had some issues, but it seemed like he never had any say during the whole ordeal. His pride was just wiped clean in this movie.

shareNone of them. As with "Brokeback Mountain" this was a collection of unlikeables. After watching this film I was left with much the same feeling as I was with the aforementioned film, i.e. "So what?" Pointless.
shareI can see why you might say that leeazon. I've never seen Brokeback Mountain, though. You probably felt how I felt about "Closer". I hated every character in that film. "The Ice Storm" just felt like a strong film to me. And the characters were so complex. Even if you were supposed to hate them, I ended up loving them.

Did you ever think that perhaps you aren't supposed to like the characters in Closer, or The Ice Storm? Take Closer, for example. Each of the characters represent the kind of person that no one wants to be. yet, the movie exists, because people like this exist.
I think both of these movies exemplify many of the things about human emotion that aren't so pleasant. Guess what, this isn't a new thing, I believe these thoughts/emotions have been around for thousands of years.
I guess what I am trying to say is, you aren't supposed to like the characters...
The difference between Closer and The Ice Storm is that the characters in Closer were completely unlikeable. They were stereotypes of "unlikeable" characters. but even Hitler had his sense of humor. In Closer, i cared about what happened to those characters about as much as i care about when The Real Housewives will be on tv. In the Ice Storm, they are flawed Characters (like in Brokeback Mountain), but you know that on some level they mean well, or just need a wake-up call. In closer, they were all *beep* liked being *beep* and were never going to stop being *beep* Who cares about characters like that. it's one thing to be avant-guard (if you even want to call it that)...its another thing to foret your audience.
sharei wholeheartedly disagree with you leeazonn. Brokeback Mountain was a masterpiece, and I didn't think it was a collection of unlikeables. Jack, Ennis, Alma, Alma Jr., Cassie... i liked them all. Particularly the main characters... Ennis and Jack. It wasn't pointless, and this film wasn't pointless.
The charcters are flawed, but not unlikeable. Perhpas you just didn't really get into the film and the characters' stories.

The best thing about these movies is that characters. It is really good when movies make characters that have good and bad sides to them. In Brokeback Mountain all of the characters had flaws but you really cared what happened to them because you saw their good and caring sides also. The Ice Storm was similar in that sense.
Yes, I agree. All of the characters in the Ice Storm are going through some troubling times, they are also going through some self discovery (eg Wendy) and are learning more about life. I cared for them because they seemed real, and they may have had some bad sides, but they certainly weren’t dangerous or unlikable. However I didn’t particularly feel sorry for Janey, maybe it is because I didn’t see her in the film, much, but when she was shown she seemed very cold and distant.

I feel most sorry for the kid's (Elijah Wood's character)father Jim Carver(J. Sheridan) because his wife (Sigourney Weaver) was the most adulterous and emotionally absent, although you can empathize with each character. I found it just a bit disgraceful that these people openly swapped spouses---granted I do realize it was the trendy, groovy, liberal way of the 1970s-but I, being extremely liberal myself, believe that it contributed to the increase in divorce rates and unhappy marriages, and that is sad. Anyway, I don't want to make in depth comparisons between movies and other stuff---I really enjoyed this movie---it was dark, somewhat sarcastic and comical, and it really makes you think. It kind of reminded me of American Beauty with that existential emphasis and that artistic/dramatic flair---great cast as well.

I disagree about Closer. I did care for them. Yes they were all self centered, but all of them were just looking for the perfect love. I love Closer; one of the best films EVER made.
shareLee is a genius in the way he makes you look back upon an era and see it so much more real then when you lived thru the same time. I was not an adult at the time of "IceStorm" but lived thru that time and remember it so well. leeazaloseron is just a prejudice bigot who wants only to see life as she dreams it could be. She shows her immaturity and bigotry and narrowmindness by throwing insults to Lee with her "Brokeback Mountain" comments. She thinks she is Cinderella but is really the evil Step Mother. But she cannot help but dream she is like beautiful Cinderella but in reality she is a bitter old ugly wench of a despicable hag, loathing everything that does not live up to her false values only because she herself is so below her own hateful standards. So she hates everything that would show her how ugly she truly is either inside or out because she is too damn ugly to live in her imperfect world where she is the grosses imperfection in that world. Sorry leezahag but the world is not perfect and one big reason is because you are in it.
