totally underrated film

i can't believe this movie has no postings. i mean, come on, time roth is a demi-god and what with the cult of personality surrounding tupac, i was certain to find some stimulating posts here. alas, i am anything but stimulating so, i leave it to you who are brilliant but reticent to start your own thread.
let's discuss the "rebirth of slick" heroin jazz. let's discuss how hot thandie newton is, even as a junkie. let's all rail against how unfortunate that someone with tupac's talents died, but jennifer lopez is still alive and kicking. let us filibuster on the sheer joy that tim roth is (quite possibly one of the hottest sexy-ugly guys alive today... oh, to be involved in a fingercuffs between he and steve buscemi!)
come on people, who's with me on this!?

Absolutely agree. I was hesitant to watch it the first time; but I worked at a video store when it came out; so I watched a lot of films that I normally wouldn't have & I absolutely LOVED this! So glad to find others that did too.

I completely agree, this movie is the pinnacle of a film being underrated. I find it funny people only associate Tupac's acting career with his half-assed performance in Juice rather than this clever work of art.

reply

Underrated? This was the only 2pac movie with a 3/4 star, I saw it for the 1st time last night. It's a great movie

yeah this movie is very underrated. i watched it (while in rehab) and Tim Roth plays a junkie to a T. trying to hit one in the stall while the cops are after them...classic.

What a superb actor Tim Roth is, i was first mesmerised by his acting in Resevoir Dogs easily the best performance in that movie. And here, he is at the top of his game playing a junkie in a gem of a movie that has gone unnoticed. To suprise, holding his own next to Tim Roth is also a superb performance by Tupac Shakur who might've even stolen the spotlight from Tim Roth. We will never know how good of an actor Tupac could've been. May he rest in peace.

took the words right out of my mouth - this movie is surprisingly stunning! biting satire that manages to be both disturbing and laugh-out-loud funny. i'm a gigantic Timmy Roth fan (whom i don't think is "sexy-ugly" at all but just plain sexy) and he delivered as always. he's the only actor in the world who can make a junkie loveable and disarming. but Tupac Shakur did indeed give the standout performance - what a natural! sincere and charming without trying too hard. on top of all that Roth and Shakur had amazing chemistry! i read a Tim Roth interview that said during filming they got to be good friends (Tim even recorded some rapping!) and it shows. what a gem of a film.

hey - does anyone else remember Vondie Curtis Hall's very brief appearance in "Coming to America"? it was hilarious!

yeah this movie is phat

I agree with everyone else that has said this movie rules cuz it does.
I was also suprised to see that the director was D-Reaper, sheer madness. The directing and script were great, as was the acting, and the score was amazing.

This film isn't underrated at all considering it has a 6.9/10 rating on here - which is a very respectable rating.

What it is, is underseen.

Great fillm but prefer tupac in juice. I think pac would of gone well in films consisting of the big two al pacino and de niro in some gangster film

reply

This is a really great movie. The amazingly springy'n'zingy electric and natural chemistry between Tupac Shakur and Tim Roth is a total joy to behold. Thandie Newton was utterly adorable as Cookie. And the film's pitch-black sense of raw, caustic and profane humor completely hits the spot as well.

Excellent movie. This should be in the top 250, no question.

underseen is Right

reply

I too think it's underrated. It's a hysterical black comedy. Roth and Shakur shine in this.

reply

Underrated might be a wrong word, because anyone who have seen it liked it (just look at this board). Yet the bigger audience haven't seen it or even heard about it, so it's just plain ignorance.

It's a great movie, no doubt. Haven't seen it for a while though, now I'm itching to get it somewhere. :)

I'm a fan of Tupac, but I still kinda felt that this was his peak, the right role that came by. Otherwise I think he was an OK-actor, never left you embarrassed, which is a lot more than you can say about these new cats.

reply

Definitely an under-rated film.

reply

A very underrated movie and it's definitly a cult movie in my eyes. Tim Roth and Tupac are seriously good here. Tupac will surely be missed. R.I.P. one luv

reply

just saw this for the first time on ifc....never heard anything good about it but tim roth was in it so i figured what the hell.....and after watching it im shocked it doesnt get more recognition

reply

Even though i'm out of the hip hop culture I still adore this movie. I use to watch it endlessly on VHS in my youth.

Deserves at least 7.5 out of 10. c'mon IMDUMB.

I gave it a straight 9 because I love it so much. The scene with the pocket knife is priceless! Overall a very authentic, funny movie. 2pac and tim pull off a great show and Cookie is just adorable to no end.
