The End, It really ruined the film for me. I wish the ending was just the Demon got stuck at that cabin and there was no way for it to get out of the woods. The movie was a 7/10 for me the whole way through but the ending made it a 5/10 or me.
shareI'm not one to have to have a rainbows and puppy dogs kinda ending, but I didn't like the ending here either. I tell myself that Hobbs didn't actually poison himself and just tricked Azazel into thinking that so Azazel wouldn't have another body to enter. Then Azazel jumps into the cat and Hobbs later wakes up. Then, a sequel where Hobbs can clear his name and end Azazel once and for all could take place. It won't happen now, but that's what I tell myself. Good movie until then.
shareFully agree with the OP. At the end I felt cheated, with two hours wasted. With Denzel and a great supporting cast, this film had strong potential to be heavyweight but instead fell far short. Too bad.

I first saw this movie when it first came to video (so, maybe 1999?) and just rewatched it for the first time since then. The general concept and the twist ending are the only things I remembered about the film. The twist was the reason I got it so I could show it to my wife.
It's a low blow when you first watch it I suppose, but it's pretty much the most memorable part of the movie.
People don't like to be meddled with.
I thought the ending was perfect. It seemed only logical that the demon, after existing for thousands of years, would end up winning the showdown between him and Hobbs. And the possessed cat walking by Hobb's corpse was also a nice little touch, it was as if Azazel was still mocking him even after death. Great movie.

I agree. Also, I think he was also trying to say that the demons walk among us every day with that final scene of the crowded city street.

shareWell, to each their own. I thought the ending was too downbeat and I do understand that a horror film is not always going to have a happy ending but I was rooting for Washington's character and the ending just really hurt the movie in my opinion.

Truly the story was about Azazel and not about Hobbs, as stated in the beginning "let me tell you about the day I almost died" To me this speaks as Azazel speaking through Hobbs. Which to me the end completes the whole story.
Thee ending is one of the only things i like about this movie.

The ending was a cop-out, plain and simple. It wouldn't exactly have been a happy ending with Hobbes, Jonsey, and Sutherland dead, but it would have been more fulfilling if Azazel was defeated. The people who made this movie screwed up big time.
I agree with those who say this movie lost stars or points because of the ending. I don't see how anyone can say the ending is an improvement upon the movie unless you entirely despised the movie.
There are many other issues I have with the movie, the stupid "demon" cinematography, certain plot issues that I don't entirely understand. Notwithstanding, I still gave it seven stars because sixes and lower I tend to reserve for films that are gradually less interesting and more unbearable to watch.
I love the ending. This film easily gets a 9 (or better) from me.

I agree, I love plenty of films that have downer endings but I felt in Fallen, it was just poorly done. It didn't work and it's not very original either, hell just look at Shocker, The Horror Show, and Destroyer, all three of them are more horror but still.

I myself was rooting for Denzel Washington's character, yet if it had had it where Hobbs' (Washington) plan had worked, and Azazel was defeated then and there, that would have been predictable, and thus not nearly as chilling. This way, it was more chilling, to have that unpredictable ending, where the bad guy won. But it could have been done better, I agree. Sort of like the Thing, where MacReady (Kurt Russell) blew up the facility, leaving only himself and Childs alive. It was clear they were both going to die in the cold. And if the Thing was in one of them, it would simply hibernate in the cold as before. It's left ambiguous...or a better example: Se7en. When John Doe won after all, by having Mills (Pitt) kill him, thus fulfilling the final sin, wrath. But I digress...even if the cat was not there, Azazel probably could have found an animal there in the woods, such as a deer perhaps, or a squirrel. And even if Hobbs had not poisoned himself after all...if he had simply jumped in his car immediately with the cat upon shooting Jonesey, and driving off right then, petal to the metal...would Azazel be able travel fast enough to catch up? Maybe. Remember, he passed through the solid, sealed wall of an execution chamber after Edgar Reese's execution. Even if he could not catch up, once again, he'd probably find a nearby animal in the woods to possess. (Sorry if I oversimplify. I have autism. One habit I suppose.)
