MASSIVE Plot Failure

Well, it's a good thing for the Humans the demons are STUPID (or at least highly unmotivated). (Or perhaps just interested in HAVING FUN!)

Why waste so much time worrying about Denzel if you want to cause the Apocalypse?

With all that demon power, it would have been SO EASY to start murdering people by the dozens. Cops kill you? Move on to the next body, no problem. Kill a bunch more that day. That Azalea (hee hee) could have taken out hundreds of people every single day.

The poor ending to the film only proves my point. "20 more murders on your scorecard"(or whatever J. Goodman says there at the end.) Only 20? Why? Why not kill a couple hundred? And then do it again? And Again?

"Dude, it's Lord Goblin King, not Lord Go Blinking!"

Why didn't they perform an Exorcism and banish Azalea forever? I enjoyed Fallen until the final act; ludicrous ending, a cheap and nasty cop out.

It's all a deep end.

reply

Maybe because the movie didn't need a conventional "happily ever after" ending in order for it to be satisfying. The "exorcism" ending you just described IS a cheap copout and has been done countless times. Good thing you don't write screenplays.

You're thinking to small. He could easily get his way into the Presidency and start dropping bombs. He could start WW3 very quickly.

But, Azazel strikes me as the type who enjoys toying with people. What would be the fun in killing everyone if that would leave nobody left to play with?

reply

I think that's because Azazel enjoyed puzzles, hunting his prey and taking pleasure in his kills. He's a demon after all. Also just as in any FPS game, there is not much fun in playing god mode all the time.

It's set up early on, during the conversation with James Gandolfini in the bar, that Hobbes is an unusually good person. Later on, it's mentioned that there are certain people on the Earth who are meant to fight the demons, one being the woman Hobbes meets and another being, it's implied, Hobbes himself.
No doubt Azazel recognizes this and that's why he singles out Hobbes for his attentions.
Also, it's not like the demons want to just kill everyone... they want to bring about the 'fall of Babylon'... they want to destroy civilization and have humanity descend into barbarism. So finding 'heroes' and ruining their reputation is a means of churning up a darkness in public morale... tearing down their icons and leaving them without hope. So a destroying the character of someone like Hobbes would be an irresistible choice for doing such work.

It's not about "killing" it's about "killing good people". He couldn't enter Hobbs at the prison because he was a good person, so he needed to break him down in order to destroy him. If you didn't get that, you didn't watch the film.
