Well, it's a good thing for the Humans the demons are STUPID (or at least highly unmotivated). (Or perhaps just interested in HAVING FUN!)

Why waste so much time worrying about Denzel if you want to cause the Apocalypse?

With all that demon power, it would have been SO EASY to start murdering people by the dozens. Cops kill you? Move on to the next body, no problem. Kill a bunch more that day. That Azalea (hee hee) could have taken out hundreds of people every single day.

The poor ending to the film only proves my point. "20 more murders on your scorecard"(or whatever J. Goodman says there at the end.) Only 20? Why? Why not kill a couple hundred? And then do it again? And Again?

Yeah that's a good point. In a city the demon could have killed thousands, with little to no evidence.

Although I suppose that people would realise that something is up - people don't usually kill each other by the thousand. They would start looking for other reasons, such as a viral outbreak causing the killings. Maybe the demon wanted to stay hidden and not even give anyone a clue that it exists.

It's clearly stated in the film that humans aren't supposed to know about their existence, and as a demon drawing attention to yourself would be a no-no.

I'm sure the idea is that while some demons are hellbent on destruction this particular demon is just keen on amusing himself because he's been at it for eons already. I mean, I know I'd get bored with eternity and try to find ways to entertain myself.

The only way round that is, if by the story's rules, demons are real and can be destroyed, it makes sense that the demon stays subtle in case any of the pious Americans attribute sensational crimes to these absurd theological causes.

While I don't see any "plot failure" in this pap provided by its amateurish writer, I do as an adult and sentient atheist find myself less than taken by its dependence upon the Old Testament, Kabbalah, and Koran.

Only two things are actually knowable:

Because Hobbes "caught" him as Reese, he tried to enter him by touch but couldn't so he took offense. His idea of fun was slowly and systematically torturing him because there's something pure about him he couldn't corrupt by conventional methods. Anyone (or entity) can be "smart" but have a weakness which leaves you vulnerable... Azazel liked being sadistic on the most personal of levels, Hobbes knowing what was going on but leaving him (seemingly) powerless to do anything about it was more fun than just killing a bunch of people randomly. Causing the apocalypse is part of the long term plan and part of prophecy, so he wanted to get his jolly's until that time had truly come, which I'm sure wasn't exactly up to him (he's not God).

I think the larger of plot failures was when the girl (Azazel) was on TV saying the "cop kept on shooting"; where as anyone would know she was lying because if I recall it was a single shot to kill the school teacher. There's no physical evidence to support her claim, and in actuality that should have cleared Hobbes instead of sending police to his house to arrest him.

^^This. But yeah, when the girl, possessed by Azazel said that, it's true they could've went after her but then again, Azazel could've went into someone else. Look at what he did to poor Charles. Had the guy insult his boss, lose his job and then kill the guy when he was through with him, just for kicks and the added bonus of screwing with Hobbes' as well. I can't really think of any plotholes in the film. Azazel was having "fun" destroying Hobbes' good name, like he did with Robert Milano and probably other good cops before that. I loved that Azazel actually panics at the end because Hobbes finally had him, poisoning himself meant he would finally die and being that there was no one around for miles, like Hobbes thought, meant Azazel's ass was grass. Great flick, very underrated. 

The biggest plot failure is why Azazel didn't just jump when Reese was caught.

I'd say he's been doing this for centuries and he got bored and started *beep* with people. He may have started this with the cop before Denzel and possibly found more enjoyment out of this than bringing about the apocalypse or just put that on the back burner. Also, if he has so much power, why has he not brought about the apocalypse by now already? How are any human beings even left on Earth? He can only cause so much destruction in one body, seeing as how murdering a ton of people increases your chances of being killed or being caught and sent to prison/executed. Maybe Azazel has an inflated opinion of himself, maybe he could never even bring about the end of the world, or simply his ego gets in his way.
