I like Antony Hopkins he gave a great performance as always but I think this movie needed Sean Connery he was more alpha than Hopkins.

shareThe movie had more thrills and suspense with someone who did not exude macho machismo. If we had a charismatic tough guy, we wouldnt have feared the bear and baldwin wouldnt have seemed much a threat for the climax.
As much as I like Sean Connery, this movie was better without him.

If Mel Gibson or Harrison Ford played Baldwin's role they would have been quite menacing at the end.This movie had the second or third choices as leads.
And I don't think a 66 year old Connery could make us believe that he could beat a huge ass Bear that easily...The Bear of this film is the stuff of nightmares not even Arnie could overshadow this Bear
It needed men that we believed could survive, but still feared for them making it! Too strong of leads kills it.
Take Surviving the Game for example, main star was Ice-T going up against Gary Busey and Rutger Haur. We FEARED for Ice-T because these baddies meant business. But imagine if the main character was Arnold Schwarzenegger...wouldve been a totally different experience.
Think baldwin was perfectly cast as a kind of sleazy/cowardly type who ultimately doesn't really have the guts to kill Charles
And as someone said above Hopkins was perfect for Charles the nonchalant condescending he brought to it. Connery would've been good too though maybe even more startling, but probably not as effective as Hopkins was. Its funny was watching The Edge again for first time in years last night and thought you never once think of him as Hannibal Lector he doesn't even look the same despite all the close ups of his face which was such a big thing of the Hannibal films.
I just had an idea!
Imagine Anthony Hopkins stays the same role
and Sean Connery takes over the part that baldwin had! That wouldve made for an interesting movie!
He reminded me of him too!
