Matthew McConaughey is the worst thing about this movie
Not just his performance but the character itself is useless. Why is he constantly hanging around the White House? He's not even a government official.

shareOne reason they needed him was to have someone for her to come back to. She never had a mom and her dad died when she was a kid. She was pretty much alone. They had to sneak in a romantic relationship somehow
shareYes, but the character hardly seem to show much passion for her. Started off by lecturing her about life. Maybe McConaughey just couldn't work up much enthusiasm for Jodie Foster, so they wrote it that way, (I know I wouldn't be able to act passionate towards her, that's for sure!)
shareshould have been a woman. i did not believe their relationship at all .... other than the fact she has a great figure and he was thirsty
shareI don't know; been awhile since I have seen it; but if I remember correctly the worst thing about this movie was just how ridiculously slow and boring it was; and then there is no payoff (the 'alien' take the form of her father, there is a short boring conversation and there is no proof it even happened) so slow boring movie ended up feeling totally pointless.
shareThe point of the movie isn't about the alien, it's about how people would react to the knowledge of an alien civilization. I think it's a pretty interesting question. Certainly more engaging than another phaser-blaster slugfest.
shareWell said
shareThat might be true; but that does not mean that it needs to be an incredibly slow place that basically sucks all tension and engagement from the film.
Now I have not watched it since I was like 17 or 18 the late 90's so my 'remembrance' of how boring it was might be inaccurate. But I watched it with my uncle, father, older brother and younger sister. Everyone was equally bored. Maybe that is just my family. :)
We've had films like that since The Day the Earth Stood Still and War of the Worlds. That's not interesting.
shareNo, both of those films are about direct interactions with the alien. This is distinctly different.
But hey, if any movie that touches on any topic that has ever been presented in another film is automagically "not interesting" to you then my guess is that you haven't seen or cared for a new film in a very, very long time.
There is nothing interesting about the resolution in Contact. A walk on the beach? I would hope the novel offered something more.
sharethats because people cant enjoy an intelligent sci-fi movie or understand it.
shareI agree. He was the worst. Not a good character and not a good performance. But I didn't like Jodie Foster much more. Her 'breathless' acting gets tiring. I hate that ending. I wonder if that's how the novel ended, too.
shareJohn Hurt was the best thing about this movie.
shareI BELIEVE HE WAS LOOKING FOR HIGH SCHOOL GIRLS.
shareWhy was a Bible bashing surfer dude anywhere near a science mission?
I despised him. He was a dick to Jodie Foster's character too.
He was marketing by the producers to get typically non-watching SF people such as women under the age of 35 to see the movie. Just like having Jake Busey was to lure the Helter-Skelter members of society to the theater.
shareThe fact that he has less chest hair than his co-star is a bit disturbing, but I thought he did okay. Ask Pat Robertson or Billy Graham why they get to spend so much time in the White House; they're not government officials either. As for Mr. McConaughey's performance, I don't think he's taken this film off his resume. On the other hand, 'Sahara'? Hmmm....
