why did billy let jeff in on that he knew something about his wife

watching this film back again, always loved it

but just had me thinking, when jeff has just been ordered out the diner for assaulting the owner, you see billy cleaning his car, before muttering out about knowing his wife

why would he of done that? was it cus deep down he wanted to help him but knew he couldn't, or was he always meant to give away that he knew

Jeff was calling the police when Billy started talking. Billy then tells Jeff that the whole town is in on it including the police. So Jeff ends up not calling the police. Latter on, that long haired guy kills that police officer, revealing that the police weren't in on it. I think Billy started talking just to trick Jeff into not calling the police.

"Latter on, that long haired guy kills that police officer"
Although he shoots him, it is implied that the officer later survives.

Trying to act like he was a good guy, I'm glad they all got it in the end, They all deserved it.

No he told Jeff that he knew something about his wife to lure Jeff up in the hills where they could overpower him, take his car and kidnap him too...they always wanted both the husband and the wife and at that point, the wife had told them the lie that they actually were wealthy and had 90 000 dollars at the bank, so at this point, they really wanted to get a hold of Kurt Russell aswell.
