Why was Dirk smiling for that quick minute while being scared at the drug dudes house. He seemed to be zoning out to the son i just want to know someones interpretation on this

I agree with everyone's interpretations here. I always took it as Dirk's moment of clarity, knowing who he is at this moment and knowing what is needed to survive and endure.

I don't even remember this part of the scene and I just saw this film a few days ago. Gonna have to rewatch it now.
