Is there anyone who has the courage to say this movie is stupid and sucks?

Is there anyone who has the courage to say this movie is stupid and sucks? I've tried watching TBL several times, and have seen many clips of it. I think this is the kind of movie that a big aggressive crowd acclaims greatness too that is not really that great ... kind of like Trump supporters.

reply

The aggression will not stand, man.

reply

Not sure what this has to do with Trump but personally, I didn't care for this film. It was okay, nothing all that special but that's just movies, each will appeal to some but not to others.

reply

Nothing special, except that somehow this got hyped into being the most cool movie, with the "Dude" and making Jeff Bridges famous. That is most of my irritation over it ... it is pure drivel, marketing, hype.

reply

In my opinion this film is more entertaining than most new releases these days.

reply

Jeff Bridges was already a famous and leading Hollywood actor.

It sounds like you're mad because some close friends and/or associates love quoting this movie.

I never got into golf or Caddy Shack but I have friends who obsess over both and to this day still quote characters and scenes from the movie. They also think Rodney Dangerfield was funny, but to me he's more passe than Syd Ceasar

reply

> It sounds like you're mad because some close friends and/or associates love quoting this movie.

Always fun to hear people's projections about a post that could not possibly give you enough information to pass judgement. There are a few movies like that where people think they are cool quoting lines and characters. It's not that, it is just the mindless marketing of fake cool.

reply

But there is no marketing of TBL, it's a cult movie and like I said it sounds like your annoyed by people who like it. Okay maybe they're not your friends, but they exist and their adoration of TBL annoys you. I get it.

That being said, TBL is by no means a highly rated or even popular commercial success. It's a cult movie with a following.

reply

It's called viral marketing. I guess ignorant manipulatable people do annoy me a little bit, not really the fact that they like this movie. There are movies I think are not good movies that I like, the guilty pleasure, but I would not make a spectacle of it.

reply

In my personal life more people Hate TBL than like/love it. Only a few like me like it a lot. A smaller minority of friends have no real opinion, and they're not really cinephiles so I think that's why.

reply

If one could only study the brains of those who like this movie, it would be fascinating to find out the reasons. ;-)

reply

They like fun? Quirky characters? A thriller wrapped in a comedy?

reply

I get it, dude. Everything that you don't like or appreciate that others do is only popular because someone has brainwashed them into believing they like it.

And to think I left a political discussion board to come to a place where stupidity and arrogance were not on the daily agenda. Oh, well.

reply

Thank you.

reply

Maybe you should put your priorities elsewhere.

reply

There's nothing brave about admitting that you didn't like this movie, or even hated it.

It did not do well at the box office and got some pretty scathing reviews from respected film critics. Some even charged that the Coen Bros. got spoiled by their success from Fargo and were just doing a Cheech & Chong movie for the hell of it.

reply

Plausible.

reply

I suppose it's fun if you think drug burnt-out losers are fun.

reply

I mean....they are.

reply

When my husband and I first watched this movie, we fell all over each other laughing because -- other than the New Age mumbo-jumbo -- The Dude was exactly like our friend Dennis. Dennis was that way because of a lifetime of drug use and that time he crashed his motorcycle and wound up with a steel plate in his head and a great story with the punchline, "...so I know I actually have brains because I've seen them."

Okay. I take your point.

reply

But there was no drug burn outs in this film. It's all a matter of perspective.

I could watch a movie about Jesus from a Rightwing perspective and decide that this Jesus guy is a hippie and a communist who doesn't want to work because he thinks he's the son of God.

reply

As I said, "The Dude" is just like our friend Dennis who got that way through too many drugs for too long and leaving some of his brains on a highway in California. He was a drug burnout, and knew it. He wound up in Narcotics Anonymous. I read a synopsis that called Lebowski a "slacker," which is another term for lazy drug-bum, but the, like, you know, space cadet manner of speech is typical of what we used to call "drug burnouts."

It's not so much a matter of perspective as it is a generational thing. This was for the Boomer generation. Younger people probably have different terms for folks who fried a lot of their synapses with pot and psychedelics and were always "between gigs."

BTW, the hippie Jesus is a left-wing/liberal/progressive thing. A knowledgable person can start with the "Nazarene" vs. "Nazarite" problem and just go on all day about what's wrong with that take.

reply

I had friends who abused drugs and they're dead. I can't relate to the idea that the Dude is a loser because he smoked pot. I also grew up people who smoked weed but now they don't and they liver pretty good and healthy lives. Like I said, it's all about perspective and perception. To me, Jeffrey The Dude Lebowski is an anti-archetype based on a culminations of different people.

And here we go again... 🙄

It must be weird to be in the minority opinion of this movie.

The humor / writing was off beat, the characters unique, high artistic merit in a few scenes, great soundtrack, interesting story.

It is easy for me to see why this has a very high cult status.

Will it hold up in time? Unclear...every generation has a different sense of humor.

reply

I don't think anything holds up after the generation that likes something passes away.

reply

Hard to tell.

Because it is a Cohen brothers movie, it might have some added longevity.

On the other hand

The characters might be too odd for next generation to identify with.

reply

They're work will be around for posterity and I'm sure 100 years from now millions will appreciate their craftwork, but people will be very different by then and how we view ourselves and interact today may be 80% different in the future.

reply

Not me I find it very funny especially the “your being very undude” and “we’re gonna cut your dick off Larry” lines.

reply

As most 12 year olds would.

reply

Oh wow... you again.

reply

I’m afraid so.

reply

Did this guy ever make a positive post in which he doesn't shit on something?

reply

None that I’m aware of. If you happen to find an uplifting positive post made by this user please let me know.

reply

I kinda have the guts to say it. After 20 plus viewings. I usta love it now I don't. But it made me learn about white Russians, caucasians, and I drink that drink all the time now.

reply

LOL. I don't drink very much, but lately I've taken to sipping Jack and Coke. I got the idea for Jack and Dr. Pepper from the Kominsky Method starring Alan Arkin and Michael Douglas, but I didn't like it, but Jack and Coke is really good ... it's just not good for me.

reply

Micky* Douglas, I love jack and coke. Or just jack on the rocks. But I would probably drink brake fluid...unless someone STOPPED me.

reply

Yeah, Michael Douglas. His character always drinks Jack and Diet Dr. Pepper. It's not terrible, but it is not good either. Jack and Coke is really good. Oh ... and stay away from the brake fluid.

reply

But it's blue. Looks tasty.
