Batman 89 is Tim Burton still in his 1980's heyday, making his best big budget movie ever. It's not very comics-accurate, but everything else works perfectly: Set design, music (my gosh, the music is incredible), cast, action, etc. 4 stars

Batman Returns is a product of 1990's Tim Burton: He's a bigger name and can command a bigger share of the decision making process, but he's also lost the spark that made his first movies so perfect. This movie is Burton to the excess: twisted, with an odd sort of black humor, macabre, occasionally weird. It's not really a Batman movie at all; it's about three misfits who don't have a normal place in the world and who find their purpose in trying to kill each other. It's not bad. 2.5 stars

Batman Forever is Joel Schumacher's first attempt at the franchise. He's more restrained, more focused on the story here, as if he still cared to give Batman some depth and story. In a lot of ways this movie is the marriage of Burton's darker style, and Joel's more colorful take on Gotham. As such, it's tonally inconsistent and some of those style choices are just plain ugly. 2 stars

Batman and Robin is a product of Joel Schumacher being allowed to cut loose. No one cared about story or depth; it was all about selling toys. This movie has been compared to the Batman 66 TV show but that's unfair to Adam West and company. That show was in on the joke. This is more like a live action version of the He-Man TV Show. This is Joel Schumacher in excess. Vapid, loud, garish, embarrassing to all involved. 1 star.
