Was Val Kilmer contracted to do this movie?

In effect, Warner Bros. wanted to ensure that Kilmer would stay unlike Michael Keaton, who I believe was only contracted to do Batman movies on a movie-by-movie basis. We all know that Joel Schumacher was adamant that he did not enjoy working with Val Kilmer on Batman Forever. Why Kilmer didn't come back for a second movie always kind of confused me.

Was Kilmer simply not brought back because of his allegedly unprofessional behavior on the Forever set? Even though it meant recasting Bruce Wayne for the second consecutive time, it wasn't worth the trouble and risk dealing with Kilmer again.

Apparently, Kimer went off to do another movie (I don't know if it was the Island of Dr. Moreau or The Saint) when he was scheduled to start working on Batman & Robin.
