Comedy Masterpiece....hear me out.

I like to think of this as the 'This Is Spinal Tap' of the superhero genre. It is genuinely one of my all time favourite comedies. Seriously, re watch it if you can with this in mind and you'll see what I mean. Every creative decision is the worst possible decision that could be made. Almost every minute of it is jammed packed with hilariously misguided choices that were undertaken very seriously. The trivia also adds an extra layer of comedy. For instance, Schwarzenegger was paid $1M a minute to deliver those God awful nonsensical puns. It also basically destroyed the superhero film market for nearly 10 years.

I'm not of the opinion that superhero movies by principal, shouldn't have comedic elements or moments of levity. That was one of the biggest criticisms of Batman v Superman, in that it took itself WAY, WAY too seriously. I don't know how to describe the silly and goofy moments in Batman & Robin, other than they just don't feel authentic or logical (like it's natural for somebody to say or behave like that under those circumstances). The movie just stops dead in its tracks whenever it tries to be funny.

Batman & Robin probably suffers from the worst case of tonal whiplash that you'll ever find in any movie, much less a superhero movie. I don't have time to go through it all but clearly, the movie is always looking for some sort of way to through in a cheap gag or pun. Take for instance the scene in which Batman and Robin abruptly stop to talk about how Poison Ivy has nice "stems and buds". It kind of reminds me of how Richard Lester handled the Superman sequels with Christopher Reeve.
