Clooney and Schwarzenegger playing themselves in the roles?

Same with Jim Carrey as The Riddler Clooney was just playing himself in a batsuit and Schwarzenegger was just himself in Mr Freeze make up and costume, one of those actors whose instantly recognizable in whatever role they're given.

True enough which added to the cheesiness of the film! It looks like something they threw together overnight and the director just don't them to "wing it!"  ;-/

B&R does feel like one of those films like they used only the first choices or cast people without reading them through.

Schumacher was reportedly drew a Batman cowl on Clooney on a poster or magazine.

reply

I've heard that Schumacher once actually said about his Batman films, "These actors are so good, I don't need to direct. I just tell them where to stand and have them go ahead from there," or something stupid like that.

reply

How stupid.

Reason why they ended up so bad because Schumacher keeps his mouth shut and just lets the actors play the roles how they would or how they like.

Always has to make his comments sound pretentious.

Just because an actor is recognizable in a role doesn't mean they're not playing a character. Clooney did seem a lot like himself as Bruce Wayne in public but that was pretty appropriate.

I think Nicholson may have been the most like playing himself, at least more so that Carrey or even Arnold.

reply

But unlike Nicholson Forever and B&R had the stunt casting at it's worst and the actors never seem to be dealt with appropriately, cast just because they were popular not because they were right for the roles, everyone playing the villains overacted and the heroes especially Clooney underacted.

Arnie works best as a cyborg or a military guy not a scientist. None of the roles Clooney has played since B&R are iconic characters like Batman mostly original characters.

reply

Nicholson was ideal to The Joker than the rest playing the villains because they one of these roles like they use only the first choices or cast without reading them through.

reply

They were all cast in part because of their star power and basic personas, although other actors were considered, but I don't get why Nicholson was better (I guess his persona does somewhat fit the character but he was still too unrestrained) or how the others gave bad performances for what the filmmakers were going for.

reply

One of the major things they do in the movie that dooms it is combining the casting of Schwarzenegger with the TAS backstory of Mr. Freeze. There is just too much pathos going on in that version of the character to fit into the tone that movie was trying to land.

reply

Casting for iconic characters often work when you cast lesser known actors which seems to make it more appealing, usually cast a lesser known or newcomer for Superman.

IMO Clooney appeared as if he understood it as Bruce Wayne being an actual character who spends his secret time as Batman, rather than Batman who spends his secret time as Wayne, because he played Bruce so sincerely when we all know Bruce Wayne “died” at like age 10. It never felt like Batman was the one with the secret to keep.

Plus, Clooney’s smooth baritenor voice coming out from a Batman just doesn’t work.

Schwarzenegger is a brilliant scientist in real life?
