So Underrated. Who agrees?

Particularly Samuel L Jackson's performance. This film is so overlooked. I meet a truckload of people who have never even heard of it.

Terribly underrated film. Samuel L Jackson was superb in this film; you felt the madness and almost claustrophobia settling in on Garfield and the entire setting.

"Didn't he discover America?"
"Penfold, shush."

this is a very powerful, and highly underrated film,, it deserves so much more credit and at least a 9 on the rating scale.

Great film, I've loved it since I was a kid. It definitely is one of Jackon's best performances while John Heard and Clifton Collins Jr. are also bringing their A game. Kevin Reynolds directs it in that great, gritty intelligently experimental style that has been pretty much destroyed by the takeover of superficial style over substance music video and commercial directors.

I like everything about this flick and I'm not sure it's going to be underrated for too much longer. Just look at how much activity has been on this board lately and that's for a relatively small film released over a decade ago that rarely comes on T.V.

I think it's because it's been in heavy release on DVD lately. I bought my copy about two months ago when I stumbled across in Wal Mart where it was $7.50 as part of the Samuel L. Jackson Collection.

P.S.
Does this movie make anyone else yearn for the days when there were good movies with deep characters and challenging subject matter or, hell, even the days when movies had good soundtracks?

An interesting cautionary tale for sure, but let's not get carried away. It isn't a great film.

The first half, maybe even the first two thirds was pretty good. But started to go over the top from there. Killing the rat and dog within twenty minutes was a bit much. And they went a little message crazy- administration doesn't care, teachers want to kill their students, young girls trade sex for attention, LA racial conflict, gangs and drugs, teachers drink to ease frustration and stress. You could have told me this was a John Singleton film
