Which Sgt did you prefer: DS Gavin Troy, Sgt. Dan Scott, DS Ben Jones or D S Charles Nelson?

Scott was the hottest, Jones the most likeable.

2. DS Dan Scott - the disgust from John Nettles (Barnaby) was quite noticeable - too bad they didn't get along, I've always felt Nettles missed Troy
3. DS Gavin Troy - he seemed rather young in the beginning and our family just laugh at some of his comments
I do not like the new DS Charles Nelson, something I just cannot put my finger on, but he just seems like he is out of place or uncomfortable in the role

I miss the originals - DCI Tom Barnaby and DS Gavin Troy
I haven't yet seen the episodes with Jones or Nelson, but the thing about DS Scott that I didn't care for is his trolling for dates/women or whatever you want to call it. Weak point in the writing, I think. The lame excuses he offered to Tom for why he needed to speak with a certain woman were really bad. I was hoping for more professionalism and integrity on his part.
shareNow that I'm finally on series 19, I think Ben Jones is my favorite sergeant. I liked Troy, but I prefer Jones, especially when he first came on board. He had enthusiasm which others did not. I appreciated that Barnaby recognized that. Jamie Winter was okay, my #2 I'd say, but Jones is still the tops in my book.

shareAha! Someone who agrees with me. I thought Troy was a bit dense at times. He could be quick to judge a case, often looking for the obvious suspect based on assumptions rather than following clues to see where they would lead him. I also thought the quirk of his lousy driving skills was a bit ridiculous. I'd have thought he'd have been referred to a driving course early on.
Scott was never "all there" during his stint. Also had a very condescending attitude toward Midsomer. I guess it was supposed to be a character quirk, but it quickly became annoying, but maybe that's what they were going for.
Jones appeared to appreciate the opportunity to work with Barnaby, and really signed on to looking at the evidence, but also open to finding more - at least in my opinion. I really liked his enthusiasm and curiosity.
Nelson is fine. At least they didn't make him some kind of idiot. He comes across as competent, and thankfully, not condescending.
I haven't seen enough of Winter to really judge, but he seems a reasonable fit.
Yes Tom Barnaby and Jones is the "classic" and best Midsomers duo for me. Jones always seemed to enjoy living in Midsomer. That episode where he danced with Cully at a local dance is a favourite episode of mine.
shareI think Jones is more personable than the others, and seemed more real. Also, someone you'd appreciate knowing, as opposed to Scott. He (Scott) really rubbed me the wrong way.
shareAnother thing about Jones: from the beginning he appreciated the opportunity Barnaby gave him. He took the job seriously and didn't see it as just a chance to advance so he could leave for better things. As you said, he was fine living in Midsomer.
I realize it was supposed to be a quirk of Troy, but his lousy driving skills were not believable - I just don't think it would be acceptable for a police officer to drive the way he did. You'd think he'd be referred to driving school or something. I found it hard to accept that Barnaby didn't demand it.
Could be because Barbnaby liked to do his own thing and was willing to overlook Troy's driving skills (or lack of!) because Troy fitted in - better the devil you know etc!
shareValid point. I thought Troy's return for Cully's wedding and his ending up off the road was, well, predictable. But hey, it's a show with lots of quirks, so what the heck - go for it. It was kind of cool to see him come back, even if it was just for a couple of scenes.
shareTroy was the funniest. He was a bit daft, and often jumped to conclusions (didn't think outside the box) when trying to solve the cases, but he had a good rapport with Barnaby.
Scott was alright, I didn't dislike him. He was part of some really good episodes.
Jones was the most likeable and had a good relationship with Barnaby. He was in quite a few poor episodes that I tend to skip, though.
I'll say Troy, because he was part of the classic/original era of MM, and I enjoy watching those episodes the most.
