Angel vs Spike
its obvious...Spike had real acting ability....Angel was just playing a role..
shareBetter actor, better character. BUT one that shouldn't be overused. They completely ruined him in later seasons.
shareSpike was one of the high points of Season 5 Angel, the back and forth quips and "friendly" rivalry was perfect. What did you think of him on that show?
I thought Spikes arch on Buffy through the seasons was great. Been a long time since I watched Buffy though, all I remember is not liking the final season of Buffy.
I feel like Spike was never given a chance. They spend several seasons redeeming him and building him up to be this romantic partner for Buffy and then squash it with his rape attempt. What was the point? That bothered me because, as much as I love Angel, he left and was no longer there for her and Buffy and Spike had such great chemistry!
shareI agree completely. To this day, "Seeing Red" (the episode where Spike tries to rape Buffy) is my most hated Buffy episode. I get *why* the rape attempt was added: to show that, despite the good he'd done, Spike was still a soulless monster and to put him on the path to getting his soul back. But I still hate it. You can tell that it was forced in, and I felt it did a disservice to both Spike and Buffy as characters. For me it's the biggest misstep of the show.
shareI don't think it was a misstep.....it was to remind viewers that this wasn't 'like Angel' at all. and Spike had an artificial chip which did not detect Buffy living bc she had been resurrected by people also only thinking of themselves.
That is not great chemistry. Both the resurrection and rape were conducted by people who only thought of themselves--and not of Buffy.
Spike is one of the sexiest male characters ever
shareTeam Spike here. Angel was so blah.
shareSpike was the reason I got into the show in S4.
When I started watching it Angel was already gone. Everyone babbled about him as if he was so great. When I actually saw him I was like "meh".
shareNothing against DB but I had the same experience as you. James Marsters should've gotten more recognition for his portrayal.
shareI think that Angel is a more traditional leading man. Spike has an offbeat punk/Goth appeal. I mean "Buffy" was somewhat pop Goth - the whole vampire thing.
Spike fit more for the overall theme. Angel could have been played by any goodlooking actor. He wasn't convincingly undead.
SPIKE IS HANDS DOWN THE CHAMP OF BTVS...ANGEL REALLY DEVELOPED WITH HIS OWN SHOW.
shareAngel is bland. He was ok in the early seasons but didn't need his own show or to be brought back.
Spike was best when he had the chip and was a mix of good and evil ("Draco in leather pants"). Getting his soul back turned him bland as well. Buffy should have dusted him during the r*pe scene. He wasn't a good person underneath and him trying to become one just went against his character.
Respectfully disagree on all counts.
Angel was good. He was a great first love for buffy. THe scene when he gets his soul back and she still has to kill him? GLORIOUS DRAMA.
Spike's character arc was in some ways better. The rape attempt made sense, given that he is a vampire, but his decision to go and get his soul to improve himself, was very..."empowering".
AND, his being somewhat dramatic after wards, was certainly justified, imo.
He didn't intentionally get a soul. He wanted something to give Buffy what she 'deserved' with the idea that the entity he went to would power him up to harm her
Angel had not sought out what was given to him. That's far more redeemable in my book.
I don't think so. I think he realized that he had to change and become a better person to be worthy of Buffy. He said as much when he first met buffy and she asked him why he did it, and he said "shame of you".
I agree that Angle did NOT seek what happened to him. But, that makes it LESS good. It gave him a chance, and he took it, but Spike CHOOSE that path, despite being soulless, just based on the traces of humanity left to him.
Far more impressive imo.
Spike is a better, more interesting character.
