"But what they forget is the pleasure of it. Otherwise we wouldn't do it."

This narration at the start of the film about drugs is interesting.

But then, first of all, how do they know about the pleasures of it if they hadn't tried it? And secondly, given all the potential risks of misery, depression, death and all that stuff, is it really worth it?

Besides, is there anything in life humans wouldn't try that may have small benefits but risks of bigger harm if they didn't suspect those small benefits existing in the first place?

P.S. And then people end up also dealing with social stigmas surrounding drug users etc. And unlike people who are guilty of official harmful offenses, it is not considered right by civilized people to condemn and demonize them like that, but others still do it etc.

He’s talking about the general view of heroine addiction from non-users - they see it as a nasty addiction and all the horrific things it does to a person visible from the outside, that they forgot the sheer amount of pleasure the user experiences when they shoot up.
