Scratching my head to think of another movie that's equally as funny and energetic and as bleak as Trainspotting. Pulp Fiction comes close, and maybe Clockwork Orange a bit. Are there any?

shareI'll tell you this. Trainspotting makes it look pretty good being a shitty junkie doing petty crime and scamming social services. Requiem for A Dream on the other hand, makes all drugs and all kinds of drug life look pretty fucking horrible.
That's a bleak drug film if I ever saw one.
Boyle has always been good at that blend. Remember Slumdog Millionaire? Full of energy and comedy… and features a young kid getting deliberately blinded by child traffickers because crippled beggars raise more money.
