Is this a realistic portrayal of the south in the 1990s?

I've never been to the south in my life, but I sort of figured they'd gotten past that stuff after the 60s-70s.

This film isn't a realistic portrayal of anything at all. It couldn't have been more heavy handed.

No. Left wing propaganda.

Unfortunately, it's still accurate in some parts today. Not left or right propaganda, just the sad truth.

I think the movie was supposed to take place in 1989, I think it was quite exaggerated but the element was still around.
