I agree, this movie sure takes a lot of dramatic liberties when it comes to murder trials. Why does there have to be some sort of political/personal/motivations for the prosecutor to bring charges against Carl? He killed two men, of course there's going to be charges against him. And no prosecutor on the face of the planet would have sought the death penalty against him. First degree murder? Maybe. But not the death penalty. GMAB. What Carl did was totally understandable. However, it was wrong and he should have gone to jail. I find the outcome of the trial, like the OP, to be unrealistic. The man admits what he did and feels no remorse. Again, understandable. Those two men did deserve to die. But the jury would have been forced to follow the law. In real, life, he probably would have been convicted of second degree murder and given the minimum sentence with time served. And if the racial tensions were that high in that region, then who knows.
The jury is not allowed in any to discuss the case, let alone deliberate and take votes while the trial is ongoing. It's completely illegal. They are specifically told not to make up their minds at all until all the evidence is heard and they are given jury instructions. If they started taking votes and such in the middle of the trial, that's a mistrial, for sure. 100%. It doesn't matter how secretive they are. They would have been found out. Normally, in a trial with national attention a jury is sequestered. But not always. I just don't think what happened here would have happened in real life.
I also thought it was funny that a young law student was brought onto the defense team because she had experience with death penalty trials. There is no way in hell a law student Is going to have any kind of experience with death penalty trials. It takes years and years of hard work and trial experience for a lawyer to become death qualified, prosecutor or defense attorney. You have to work your way up and that usually doesn't happen until a lawyer is in their late mid to late 30s. That was just an excuse to cast beautiful, young Sandra.
I also don't understand what was so devastating about Carl's answer to that question. Of course he thought they should die. That's why he killed them. He's not denying what he did and they are basically going for justifiable homicide. So, whatevs.
