You make an interesting point, and I see where you’re going with this. As another poster mentioned, he had plenty of shots at redemption and I believe the film accurately portrayed a common reality for many individuals and families, sinking in the quicksand of a horribly toxic, violently abusive, codependent relationship and being tied to someone who will inevitably hurt them beyond measure or kill them. I think the ending was perfect in that the ONLY way out for the family was Doyle’s ultimate demise. That being said, it would be intriguing to imagine a scenario where Linda stands up for herself in a way that catches Doyle off guard and to the extent that causes an overt bit of introspection on Doyle’s behalf.
Maybe an alternate ending showcasing this, that would definitely be cool, but I prefer the film’s ending as is.
