Can you really support youself + a son in a dollar store?

Just curious: It seemed that Frank's mom worked part time in the dollar store.
Can you support a kid, pay for a house & bills on that salary??

I know its fiction, but still...?

Not not really. They'd be hard pressed to get by; however if you're best friends with the manager, he probably gave her all the over-time she needed in order to help support her and her son....just a guess.

RIP Philip Seymour Hoffman 1967-2014... a tremendously great and talented actor.

No water bill, no mortgage, $1000/mo in foodstamps. No car. No taxes. No insurance. I see no problems.

Maybe or Maybe Not. She could have got money from the government Survivors Benefits for the herself and/or son. But, you have to remember this is a small town in the South. The cost of living is less than cities in the Midwest, East or West Coast. And also her parents were well to do, even though they disowned her, she could still be getting money from them maybe secretly, (like maybe her mom is giving her money with out her dad knowing).
