shareSorry, I can't help you there, if you don't get it. I've seen the movie several times and just watched it again. I always forget how great a movie it is. I see more layers to the theme of this movie every time I watch it.

My husband, a psychologist, said Karl's strange mannerisms and repetitive speech patterns are spot-on for someone who suffers from Tardive dyskinesia (TD), which is a side effect of long-term treatment with antipsychotic medications. Karl is a simple man, completely inexperienced in the ways of society, having been locked up for most of his childhood and all his adult life. He is essentially a child in a man's body, because like a child, he has had no experience of the world and although he committed a terrible act as a child, is still very innocent in many ways, with a strong sense of ethics. When he is released he is like a child being turned out into the world, to try to assimilate himself in a society where someone who is different, especially someone who has off-putting mannerisms and is mentally challenged, is still regarded by the bigoted small-minded people in the town as nothing more than "some retarded hick" from a mental institution, even though he is kind and good.

I'm sure he is on the lower side of normal, if not MR, but we don't really know for sure. He doesn't say everything he thinks, plus his life is very simple and he's never had the need for abstract thought. Regardless, I'm not sure his low IQ is really his defining characteristic, once you get to know his character.
