Why didn't Doyle get up?

Was it that it was his only redeeming quality to know he was a bastard, not care, and to allow Karl to do what he needed to do?

He didn't get up because he didn't believe Karl was going to kill him. That's why he finally said, "Karl?".

Thanks to all of you who contributed to this thread. I always wondered why Doyle didn't react, and I think you posters have shown logical reasons.

Doyle was 1. drunk and 2. Simply did not take Carl serious. the 1st whack removed wood from the log, the second split the log in two.
