What tipped off Sinese?

SPOILER . . .

So, at the end, when Mel Gibson is writing Gary Sinese the reward check, we know that the voice gives Sinese away to the boy and the urination gives him away to the father. But what gives Gibson away to Sinese, when he looks at the check? He says something to the effect of "This check is worthless" or "You don't expect me to try and cash this?" (I don't know, it's been eight years), and I've never understood how he catches on.

Can somebody clue me in?

He could read Tom, probably a combination of not wanting Sean to meet Jimmy, the fact that he all of a sudden became very anxious and the fact that he tried to rush Jimmy out the door.

He spots Mel pausing when he writes the cheque - id notice that too if i were sinise.
When he says to Mel - 'it shouldnt be a problem' he suddenly notices the pen in Mels hand stop, so he realises he gave himself away.

Then Mel hurries him out & Gary realises hes been caught out
