What tipped off Sinese?

SPOILER . . .

So, at the end, when Mel Gibson is writing Gary Sinese the reward check, we know that the voice gives Sinese away to the boy and the urination gives him away to the father. But what gives Gibson away to Sinese, when he looks at the check? He says something to the effect of "This check is worthless" or "You don't expect me to try and cash this?" (I don't know, it's been eight years), and I've never understood how he catches on.

Can somebody clue me in?

I think I need to see the movie again, but I don't remember Sinise witnessing the kid pee himself. the kid says hi and then walks away, before fully leaving he manages to recognize the voice; but I think only Gibson can see him at that point. Sinise knows Gibson is looking at his son and that his cover is blown. Gibson makes it too obvious. What also tipped him off was Gibson's hesitation to write the check. You can actually notice Gibson purposely fake the signature.

Jimmy Shaker (Sinise) never saw the kid at all. That's what tipped him off. Tom was looking off into the other room (at the kid) and then his demeanor changed. He started to hurry things along. Then, when his wife suggested that Shaker meet Sean (the kid), Tom's quick, almost frantic "No!!!" was the final tip off. By then, it's obvious that Shaker knows the score.

He spots Mel pausing when he writes the cheque - id notice that too if i were sinise.
When he says to Mel - 'it shouldnt be a problem' he suddenly notices the pen in Mels hand stop, so he realises he gave himself away.

Then Mel hurries him out & Gary realises hes been caught out

I think what really gave Gibson away to Sinese was when Gibson was writing the check, and Sinese says "it shouldn't be a problem" - which is what he kept saying over the phone, as the kidnapper. When Sinese says it, Gibson stops dead in his tracks, and Sinese picks up on it...

I wonder if it was more than just that he says "it shouldn't be a problem", I wonder if he said that on purpose. He was already concerned that Tom was looking over at what seemed to be him to be an empty doorway, and that Tom's whole demeanor had changed, and he may have purposely used that phrase to make sure that Tom had twigged before he chanced blowing his own cover.

I like that theory, I think tom feels something is wrong and the line just secures it not only for tom but for the audiance, because now it is deffanatly known that tom knows who jimmy is, which adds to the suspense. That is something I love in the movie, there are sooo many things that change and the stuff we know differs from what other charactors know, which sets up for so many great scenes.

I agree with everything previously mentioned. But I'd also like to add the fact that Shaker was a cop and he had earlier mentioned to Tom Mullen (when Mullen asked why the kidnapper chose him) that he picked Mullen because Shaker saw him lying about the old bribe situation on TV. Mullen convinced most of the people of his "innocence", but Shaker's bs-detector picked him off right away: in short, Shaker was an expert at telling when people were lying and he was proud of this ability. I think it was no problem for him to notice the small but significant changes in Mullen's behaviour during the check writing sequence.

reply

Yeah, that's the way I saw it. Shaker is reading Mullen's body language.

The facts have been laid out in this thread, but I'll make one addition: Shaker is a police detective. It was already established earlier that Shaker was a field operative and thus works with lies and body language all day long. So when the demeanor of his opponent changed, his training and experience kicks in.

I think that was visible when Gibson's character was writing his signature on the check, paused with a hand trembling and the camera focuses on Sinise's head for a second or two - and Sinise watches the signing like a hawk. I'd say that was the final clue for Shaker in realisation that his cover was blown.

I wondered if Tom maybe signed a completely fake name so that the cheque could never be cashed. We see him begin to sign it, pause and then we never actually see what he writes next.

He's done her. He's done Mrs Lop-sided.

You guys know that checks can be cancelled right? Just because he didn't sign a fake name doesn't mean the check isn't bull****. He could still write him the check then cancel it and have him arrested. You can't walk in to a bank with a personal check and walk out with cash, checks take time to clear.

reply

I thought it was because Mullen didn't sign the check properly. He only wrote half of his name. So the check would be worthless.

reply

You guys don't watch too good earlier in the movie the FBI were going over a recording of one of the phone conversations, when shaker said "shouldnt be a problem" they kept playing it over and over because of the way he said it so when mullen asked shaker if he would take a check since he came to his house to collect a few days early shaker said should be a problem and that is when mullen paused and shaker knew that mullen knew that he was the kidnapper.

I'll agree with that. That's right, police officers are trained to read body language, and watch attitude/demeanor changes. I believe when Shaker knew was when the name on the check wasn't correct.

The whole check signing was a gigantic plot hole. The Sinese character never would have gone to Gibson's house for a check. He would have hired an attorney firm to get the payment for him and then have them notify him when they had gotten it. And it would have been the very next day so he could leave the country.

On a another note, Sinese's fingerprints would have been all over the house where the kid was found and it would be very soon when he would be discovered.
