I think a modern day remake would be incredible.
Get a whole new A list cast and give it a hard R rating (which it should already have) and this movie could be incredible

shareAgreed.
As long as it's MORE like the original cards.
With 100% practical effects, set in the Cold War '60s.
shareIt should be done over as a serious story and not campy. And yes, stick to the original story. CGI has improved greatly since 1996 and it would look much better now.

It doesn't need a remake, they can make a sequel were the Aliens come back to attack.. this time that can introduce the large bugs from the cards, and mankind will have the capabilities to send a team to mars to destroy them (just like the cards)
The cards weren't graphic enough to make a movie an R rated, keeping with the spirit and tone of the source material it'll need to be campy and a bit silly, other wise it's not Mars Attacks.
It can't happen now because Slim Whitman sadly passed away a few years ago

A serious story would just be Tom Cruise in War of the Worlds.
shareAre you trying to tell us you like Sly's Dredd film over Urbans?
Now I can't you take you seriously.
i agree, i love sequels, loathe remakes, and this movie isn't that old, it's suppose to look a bit funny i guess, if a sequel would be made i want at least sarah jessica parker back from the original cast, right off watching this i got an ed wood (1994) vibe, even the posters look similar with the faces at the bottom, of course this has the same moviemaker and sharing an actress as well (by the way, i thought her and fox lacked chemistry playing a couple here though) and the actor in a cowboy hat again in a smaller part, i take it this is a tribute to the 1950s sci fi, sort of what edward d wood jr was making, though you'd never see a well known cast like this in those movies, this is packed with major movie stars, it's sort of like it isn't enough room for them all, some disappear for such a long while you forgot about them, and, spoiler, considering this is a comedy, you expect some resurrection by the end since so many are getting killed off one after another, and the movie seem to not have a proper ending, i've enjoyed many performances by nicholson but didn't grasp his portrayal as president, it was too goofy and not taken seriously, and brosnan puts a damper on the entertainment, i don't know what he's doing in a comedy, i thought tom jones would only have a singing bit but he actually has an acting part. the trailer to this movie includes parts not in the actual movie. the entrance of the space aliens into congress reminded of the twilight zone episode "to serve men".

you put an act on,
as careless having a ball,
distracted by your smile,
drawn into your strange eye,
let my guard down,
caught you with glasses on,
examining my soul.
Who is A list these days ? The Rock ?
