Why did it so bad at the Box Office?!

There is really something wrong with the American audience! For real...

They go out like hurds to see BAD action flicks but when a pretty OK one comes around it flops! What's going on?

The Long Kiss Goodnight is a DECENT action flick that keeps you entertained!
It should have grossed 80 million at least!

Anybody?

Lol I can't believe this has 8 pages of discussion. Kind of cool. I love this movie and would choose to watch it over so many movies that have won best picture of the last 40 years. It is what it is, an action movie that is far fetched and totally outrageous. So many action movies are like that and some make a lot of money and some don't. This is one that I watch a few times a year since it came out. Totally mindless fun for me. At least it helps me forget about all the idiots I deal with daily for a few hours.

It's always been a mystery to me why it wasn't more commercially successful. I reckon it ticks all the boxes. Interesting to read that it is both Renny Harlin's and Sam Jackson's favourite film.

I get a huge kick out of this film. I saw it three times on the big screen - that's very atypical for me. Naturally, I own it on DVD. Geena Davis & Samuel L. Jackson, though both excellent here, had uneven film histories at the time TLKG was released, & that probably affected the box office. I don't recall what the competition in theaters was at the time, but that may also have been a factor. Lastly, it seemed to me that this movie could have been better-promoted. I may be wrong about that - I don't quite trust my memory about it, but it was my impression, when it came out.

Because it came from husband/wife team Geena Davis and Renny Harlin the year after they made Cutthroat Island. That movie was horrible, and one of the biggest bombs of the decade. So when this came out a year later, there was no audience trust there and the movie suffered unnecessarily as a result. If this film had been released before Cutthroat Island, it would have performed much, much differently at the box office.

I thought this film was meant to be over-the-top as possibly a cult film. It was so bad that it was good.

Isn't it suppose to be outlandish? I really enjoyed how outrageous it was; I mean I wasn't expecting social-realism.

Not sure why it bombed. Perhaps people were fed up with Geena Davis by that point. I for one like her quirky moves. Also, wasn't there some disdain from some corners because a woman played a main role in a high-budget action flick?

PS. Is Commander & Chief worth watching?

Just want to point out to the guys who complained about the dialogue, the dialogue in this movie freakin rocks! Shane Black's the man!

I think the title is rather badly chosen, you would never guess it's an action movie. The title is really important for people who decide on the spot, and they blew it there.

I saw it in its 1996 original releas.e.okay..very good concept.
