So, perhaps some critics can stop saying that he(Assante)was overacting in this movie. If they would like to see someone who portrays a true mafia don to the hilt, then Al Pacino and Bobby de Niro would be it.
I suspect that Pacino and De Niro tend to overact nowadays because they get a lot of roles that frankly aren't up to their capabilities. I've seen a few crappy B movies that Armand Assante was in. Could be, that in Gotti, Assante finally got a role that seemed to have a little heft to it and maybe, in his enthusiasm, he overdid it a little bit.
If I could also give props to another good actor, Vincente Pastore was excellent in this.
They're must be a reason that radio DJs use Pacino sound clips for prank phone calls and that reason can't be a tendency to underact. Someday when Armand Assante's voice is on realmofdarkness.net then overacting will be a valid criticism.
Pacino has always acted BIG as he came and still comes from a theatre background unlike De Niro. He has acted BIG even in his earliest films, it's not a new trend.

I don't think Assante overacted at all. Plus he looks like a true gangster, more so than Pacino or DeNiro. Pacino and DeNiro are better actors overall, but not as gangsters, especially bosses. Pacino is too small to be a boss. DeNiro would have been better, but sometimes he overacts, as in the remake of "Cape Fear."
Do you remember Assante in "Hoffa"? Armand is the perfect gangster. In fact he would have been good as Sonny Corleone in "The Godfather," althoughg a little young for that part.
Why are you comparing Assante to Pacino based on this film? I found Assante spectacular in this film as well as in Mambo Kings, Gotti is no Corleone so why should Assante play Gotti as if he was Michael Corleone?
Based on your post, it seems you're not very familiar with Pacino's work, he played more than 1 gangster Corleone, if you've seen his other gangster films, you will realize that Pacino has played different types of gangsters and they are not at all carbon copies of Michael Corleone. He isn't like De Niro who plays the same character in every gangster or non gangster film.
I recommend you check out these other Pacino ganster films:

Both Pacino and DeNiro are both too small of guys to play Gotti, not that Assante is that much taller but he appears to be bigger then he really is. I guess you could've used Travolta in the role more so then Pacino if you're just going for someone to look believable in the role.
And why would you even compare them? I love Pacino but Armand was amazing in this movie. The way he talked, the way he walked, his attitude, everything was on point. In my opinion, no one else could have played John the way he did. Pacino is one of the greatest of all time but no way he could have played Gotti & pulled it off like Armand did. And speaking as a woman who found Gotti very attractive, Armand fit that role too cause he's a gorgeous man.
I don't think little Al Pacino or Robert (or Bobby) DeNiro as you call him have the physical stature to play a Mafia don. Certainly not Pacino. And why are you calling DeNiro "Bobby." like you know him. maybe you think you are a tough guy. You sound like a little guy also.
