Armand Assante is a good actor but he ain't Al Pacino

So, perhaps some critics can stop saying that he(Assante)was overacting in this movie. If they would like to see someone who portrays a true mafia don to the hilt, then Al Pacino and Bobby de Niro would be it.

Armand Assante was the perfect choice to play Gotti. No other actor could've captured Gotti's character like him....He even looks like Gotti. I think he was outstanding in the movie. Sure Pacino and Deniro have more credit to their names, but no matter what you think Assante was perfect for the part

You know, it's funny because some critics say that Pacino overacts. Food for thought.

I think Assante did a PERFECT job and it was very entertainning watching him portraying john Gotti!!
By the way Pacino acts slow but has very strong dialoges en movements. Armand has that too but moves faster and that makes him a better Gotti!!!

Deniro & Pacino are both great!

But Armand Assante is a greaaat Actor, he did a terrific job in this movie.
He is a definatly a underrated actor. He is great!

Assante has the perfect gangster look. And he did look like Gotti. I don't think he overacts. Since he turned 50, Pacino has been over the top in almost every film he's done. DeNiro was way over the top in "Cape Fear."

Pacino and DeNiro are magnificent actors, and both have greater range than Assante. But Assante was perfect as Gotti, and also outstanding as the don in "Hoffa." Also, Pacino (at 5'6") is too short and slight to have been credible as Gotti.

That's because you haven't seen Pacino's earlier work and have seen little of his latest work.

Over the top?

Yes, Pacino was great and not over the top in "Donnie Brasco."

I like Assante for the mere fact that he talks at the same rapid-fire pace that Gotti used to, and sounded like him. He’s quick with words, slurring *beep* together, etc. Plus, he really captured Gotti’s “admit to defeat” posture in the court room pretty well toward the climax.

Assante is a good actor and theres no doubt that no one else could portray Gotti the way he did, he was perfect for the part. DeNiro and Pacino are very established actors in and out of mafia movies. I think to be honest that Assante has been dealt different kinds of work then those two, movies that arent so great and not as critically awarding so its hard to really compare. Give Assante a movie directed by Martin Scorcese with a supporting cast of Ray Liotta and Joe Pesci and see how he does. Im sure he wouldnt disappoint.

Armand Assante, i think is the most under rated actor in the business. He did a great job in this film and i don't think we have seen his best work yet.

Assanate hit it dead on with his portrayal, hands down. Not even Deniro or Pacino could have topped that performance.

reply

De Niro possibly....Pacino I don't think so. Not a knock on either...De Niro is great at playing real people in film...intense character study....De Niro I could see pulling it off, but Assante was magnificent

Assante definately made an impact with his performance as Gotti, but I do think he did over-act a little at times. An example is the dramatic way he turns around and walks away after Neil dies. Also I think he over-did the way Gotti talks too. I don't know how to explain it, kind of like he would talk like a sentence was one big word.
