How was Gwynneth's accent?

She had or used an affected accent, which actually suited her or the film's portrayal ("accurate" or not) of Emma as a rather impestuous and affected individual...

Which was what really won over in this film, compared to the earlier and later BBC TV versions which tended to up play up melodrama and/or tragedy-- to more, the more natural/native English delivery often made the characters sound too modern/lackadaisical for the gentry of that time.


But I would notice Palthrow's accent "slipping" here and there if she made a long speech was speaking with the likes of Jeremy Northam, who was both smooth and natural...



If you care enough to go around telling people you don't care... you obviously care.

Me Mum's a Brit and I must say she has captured the accent very well. More to the point, her excellent ear has let her catch the cadences, dynamics and, most importantly, the musicality of british english. I've always noted a great difference between the accents of men and women, even from the same background and location, with the women's accent rising and falling in pitch much more so than the men's. Apparently, so has Gwynneth. Well done, and appealingly acted, as well.

I thought it was really good and that she got the various nuances right. I think her perfect for the role. In general American actresses do an excellent job with English accents, e.g. Pride and Prejudice and ....er...thingy's Diary (cannot remember the title!!!).
