Was Meg Ryan a good casting choice?

I was just looking through the IMDB trivia for this film and ran across this line:

"English critic Mark Kermode cited this film's casting of Meg Ryan as a helicopter pilot as the benchmark for a casting decision so ludicrous that it takes the viewer out of the film."

I think that Meg Ryan, especially for the time, was probably a SURPRISING choice. But I don't know that she was a BAD choice. I do say that, however, while having some reservations about her performance.

What do you think?

I thought Meg Ryan did a good job.

I thought she was fine until she started speaking, the accent was not very good. But the movie itself is kinda mediocre. For me, I thought Damon gave the best performance and I usually can't stand him.

I watched the film for the first time just before I made this thread, so I guess three years ago. I thought it was a pretty good movie with a great cast.

You may be right about Meg's accent, but that notwithstanding, I thought she did a capable job of showing that she could handle roles that went beyond the cute girl-next-door rom-com lead.

Read about MJ Hegar, young and short, a helicopter pilot in Afghanistan. She wrote a book called Shoot like a Girl. Good read.
